Can someone explain why teams and/or players greyshirt?

Cowboy, from what Im seeing it could be a number of reasons, for instance I know of the kid from DeLassale I believe got so big so fast that he needs to still develop and grow into his body. If they grey shirt him he can come in in January and if not ready by Fall he would still have a red shirt left. Another one would be, I read that Texas Tech signed 34 kids but the NCAA would only allow 25 of them, therefore the other 9 would be grey shirted until January, they can enroll in school but pay for everything themselves and not participate in any NCAA sanctioned sports another one could be grades, they can enroll in a community college or JC and then qualify in January.

Thanks I know this year injuries were given as the reason Kuhlman and Reese were greyshirted. As far I know we have three greyshirts for next January;

Watman, MacLeod and Demaster. By the way MacLeod really shot up in the recruiting rankings at ESPN.

Can anyone confirm that?
