How do other teams pull it off? Play the heavyweights " a home and home".
Well...........name the teams. Teams that are like UAB that is.
We are set up to have Butler & UC next season at home.
Georgia Tech, Tennessee, U-Conn, and Syracuse all wimped out on games. Gonzaga last year.
Go ask LE at Southern Miss how difficult scheduling is.
We have done it in the past and I'm sure we will again in the future. Right now with C-USA's RPI scheduling is difficult. Put two or 3 teams in the NCAA, and with a great recruiting class next season I'm sure it will improve. TV will dictate some matchups, especially with Cousins in the lineup.

If you want the big teams, you have to do a 2 for 1 and Davis isn't willing to do that. I prefer 1 for 1, but most big programs don't like that format.
