John Wall

Posted by Dan Wolken

If you want to know why Memphis has been tip-toeing on the fringe of the John Wall recruitment, read Gary Parrish’s excellent piece of reporting http://www.sportsline.com/collegebasketb...10924214/2 which brings to light what many have suspected and asks whether Brian Clifton indeed plans on being Wall’s agent once he turns pro. The key point in this is the discovery that Clifton, who coached Wall’s AAU team, was actually a licensed sports agent for a year (though he had no clients).

Why is this story good news for Memphis?

Wall idolizes Derrick Rose. Wall loves Memphis, and Memphis loves Wall. And without getting into too many details, if Wall ends up at Memphis, it won’t be because of the Cliftons.

I think this is just too crazy. He wants to come here but hes just being held down. sad
You gotta love the 2nd comment after the article by Gary Parrish. As if UNC, Duke, and UCLA are above cheating.....
I respect Wolken for ackowledging sources he gets his info from.

UCLA has probably derive more from cheating than any other college institution.
Question: Is Wall good enough that Memphis is willing to endure the national scrutiny and innuendo that would come with signing him? I really don't know, just asking.

He's good enough.

if his coming here really comes outside of the Cliftons' involvement, yes.
Good enough , And then some......

and UNC has a coach who is partially responsible for his former school being on probation.
it would be very sad if there's something clifton's holding over Walls head that's holding him back from coming to memphis. i just don't get what's keeping him from coming, given everything our program can give him.

..does anyone think cal's gonna back off from him??

Yes even the vaunted bruins have been known to work around the rules. Even when John Wooden was there.
Some of you old guys like me will remember their booster who kept them at his house in Bel Air, and funneled the players money and extra perks.
The only thing I can remember is his name was Sam. I don't think any of it ever cost them anything, penalty wise.
In earlier posts, I have mentioned that even Harvard has had some NCAA trouble of late.
Everyone gets away with what they can. It's a fact of life in the sport.

I'm pretty sure his name was Sam Gilbert. He was the team's sugar daddy in every sense of the word ($100 handshakes). If what he did back then went on at a school today, they'd get what Michigan got a few years back--no TV, no postseason for at least one year.

backing off a kid of this caliber is not like Cal... I gotta believe he's (and pastner) doing his best to talk wall into coming.

I am a member of the "I hate UCLA and they cheated the Tigers out of the 1973 title" club. I hate those cheating bastards more than anyone. It's not even close.

Here is a little background on Sam Gilbert.

Sam Gilbert was known to push the NCAA rules to the limit. If a player did not have money for books, he would arrange for the books to be purchased and delivered to the player. If a player needed an apartment, Sam always knew of an available one. Sam helped the players find the best deals on anything they needed.

Many people around the college basketball world have argued that Sam Gilbert committed infractions far worse than those above. Former Long Beach State and UNLV basketball coach Jerry Tarkanian has stated how he believes that the only team in Los Angeles with a higher payroll than the Bruins in the 1960s and 1970s was the Lakers. Tarkanian, along with a slew of others, believe that Gilbert provided the players with cash, cars, and whatever else they needed. Tarkanian’s program at UNLV came under suspicion of NCAA rule infractions and he constantly brought up that UCLA never faced as much pressure from the NCAA in regards to Sam Gilbert’s supposed infractions as his program did because John Wooden was untouchable. It was often noted that John Wooden knew that his players hung out at Sam Gilbert’s house but he had no personal relationship with Sam himself.

In 1981, the UCLA basketball program was placed on probation and UCLA was ordered to disassociate Sam Gilbert from the recruiting process. UCLA was told to disassociate Gilbert from the recruiting process because his name was used to co-sign a loan for a player’s car along with several other infractions.

Government officials report that a year after being forced away from the UCLA Basketball program, Gilbert began laundering money for a known drug runner in a scheme that supposedly made him $36 million. Coincidentally, when federal agents finally had enough evidence to arrest and went to his home on November, 24th 1987 in Pacific Palisades, they learned that he had passed away two days earlier of cancer.

It wouldn't surprise me if the Cliftons gave Wall money; knowing exactly what they were doing.

If they did give him money, are you implying they'd blackmail him into going to Baylor? If the bribe doesn't work, maybe the threat of revealing it would -- although that would seem like a kamikaze move by Clifton.

If we do ending up getting him, who amongst the Memphis haters would have believed it: that Wall actually rebelled against his shady handlers, (who Calipari wanted nothing to do with) because he really and truly wanted go to Memphis that badly. With each passing day, I like our chances with him a little more.
yup D20, that's probably more like it really. and now we have the great news he's coming to visit. ALRIGHT!

Yeah Dex, Sam Gilbert, that's it. I just couldn't remember his last name.
I was telling someone about it just the other day. Someone said, well at least UCLA never cheated. I almost cried from laughing so hard.
That's when I started my quest to remember his last name.
I don't use google anymore, I just ask this board.
They keep talking about us cheating and stuff. My cousin works with a guy who delivered Pizza for a Local University area pizza joint.
He said that Rose ordered pizza several times a week, and always paid with Change.
Just think dex, now he has lots of change.
No more google for me. Just ask the board.
As corrupt as things can be, they probably cheated more in the old days. It would have been much easier. No internet.
Thanks Dex, I knew someone on the board would know.
