Quote:• Jeremy Mayfield (4.3 ppg) is leaving UAB, possibly going to TCU. But Mayfield had to finish summer school, paid for by UAB, in order to transfer. He had to do that for himself to be eligible ,but also for the APR so that UAB doesn't have a student leaving that's not in good academic standing. UAB coach Mike Davis said that injured point guard Paul Delaney III is healthy after missing all but four games last season. He said Delaney III and Robert Vaden in the backcourt will mean the Blazers will be much more guard-oriented and rely mostly on these two to score. The Blazers will go with four guards at times with Channing Toney and Terrence Roderick. Davis said he has been watching a number of tapes on Villanova's team from two years ago, which was led by Randy Foye and Allan Ray, as well as tapes of Duke's recent teams, to see how much more guard-oriented teams played. He expects UAB to pressure more and run the break.
Damnit Mayfield. So much potential.

Good luck.

Well, there goes our C-USA championship hopes. 05-stirthepot
As far as big guys, that leaves us with Howard Crawford and Lawrence Kinnard. Out went Big "Z". Out went Reggie Huffman. Out went Jeremy Mayfield. What is going on?
At this rate, Aaron Johnson will be playing center for us - all 5 feet 8 inches.
I will just say, if he'd ever REALLY contributed anything on the court, I might be worried.

Even when he was on the court, all he did was make CMD and the fans mad.

I do wish him the best of luck though.
With his heart and intensity, he'd probably average more ppg and rpg than Z and Mayfield together.
Think about how much of an impact that Mayfield has made in the season and a half he played for the Blazers. And then ask yourself "Are we really going to miss him?" Are we really going to miss a "big" man that averaged less than 4 rebounds a game.

Seriously, he probably would not have been able to stay eligible for the full season.
I think we'll miss him if only for his size. Opponents at least had to consider that he is 6-10 and long, not 6'8".

It seems he can do the work without the "distraction" of basketball(as he did last Fall and this Summer). He just has to want to do it, I guess.

We've been talking about this all summer. We knew we were going to lose most of our bigs. We're gonna get killed on the boards and live and die with our guard play. We still need another big or otherwise this may end up.....oh we''ll see.

Can we revive the "Fastest 40 Minutes" slogan?

We will have to rely on speed for sure.

Except he never played like he was 6'10 or 6'8, he always played like he was 6'4.

Our best rebounder is returning. Kinnard.

I still have the T-shirt.
With the type and number of offensive weapons, we can survive with Crawford and Kinnard as our big men. Basketball is about match-ups. Everybody looks at a player like Jordan at Tulsa and believes we do not have a player to cover him. The opposite is just as true, we can put 5 potent offensive weapons on the floor and Jordan can not cover a single one of these players.

No, my brothers and sisters, no. We shall rely, as always, on belief.

A lineup of Johnson, Delaney, Vaden, Kinnard and ... Mayfield? Can you justify sitting Channing Toney for a 6-10 stuff who refuses to attack the basket and has hands of stone so unyielding as to make Roberto Duran turn Blazer green with jealousy? Would you put a Greek as immovable as Mount Olympus, who does scream "Ochi!" at the thought of contact under the basket, onto the court in place of Howard "The Beast" Crawford?

We await the sight of an NBA first-rounder who might not be the best player on his own team. We await the sight of a skilled point guard toughened by a year of experience. We await an awakened Lo Kinnard, ready to show his ability every night.

We have the players. We have the coaches. Only our lack of Belief stands between us and Six Straight.

My brothers, my sisters, this IS next year. Let us await it with joy, with anticipation.
This one's been coming for awhile. So much wasted potential...

In reality, he didn't contribute all that much, but we certainly could've used a warm body to give 5 fouls. Although Mayfield wasn't really aggressive enough to give 5 fouls...

Hopefully we can sign Darrell Shumpert. Anyone know how that is going?

I agree wholeheartedly, brother 58-56. Mayfield NOT returning is the best Blazer basketball news since we found out that Vaden WAS returning.
BELIEF!!!!

+1.

At least there's another question mark out of the way. I presume it will be easier to focus on your game plan without having to wonder if one of the most talented players on your roster is going to get his head out of his rear-end.
From what I know we would not have been able to keep him eligible a whole season any way. If TCU gets him and he is eligible for two seasons there should be an investigation. Mayfield could not spell cat if you spotted him the c & the t. He might be the dumbest athlete to ever suit up for the Blazers and I am not kidding.

I have heard his final destination will be Texas Southern but who knows with him. I had high hoes for this kid with a word of talent and a ten cent brain.
