Passing time until kickoff...

Five MAC defensive standouts who could score some national attention this sesaon:

MAC Report Online.com
Barry Church is also on the Nagurski watch list.
I guess Temple will just have to settle for having the #1 defense in the MAC again.

Andre Neblett is a Nagurski Trophy candidate
Alex Joseph as a Butkus award candidate

Never mind the "All Mac" candidates
VE, don't feel bad. In some years that Toledo won the MAC or lost in the Championship Game they had very few All-MAC players selected at season's end. Sometimes a team of good players don't get the recognition that a few individual great players get. What really matters is that Toledo won the MAC or West Division in those seasons, and if Temple does well this year, that is what matters for them. Not the individual recognition.
Anybody other than Barry Church,Zach Johnson and Chris Miller rank Top 10 nationally at their position? To give some perspective Barry would be the Top SS in the Big Ten, ranking ahead of Penn State's Anthony Scirrotto.Barry is ranked #7 by Steele's with 4 Seniors ahead of him.Miller and Johnson are the #9 and #8 punters.
I don't feel bad... just joining in the fun

Davonte Shannon of UB had as good of a season as Barry Church in 2007 if not better, and he did it as a true freshmen. 123 tackles (73 solo) to Bary Church's 93 (47 solo). Shannon had 10 Tackles for a loss compared to Church's 6. Davonte had 8 passes defended to Barry Church's 4. They both had three interceptions. Shannon also had 2.5 sacks. I couldn't find any sack info for Church. Finally, Shannon had 3 forced fumbles. Church only had 1.

Oh yeah, and Shannon also did all of this starting only the final 8 games. He played nickel sparingly the first 4 games before he made his way into the starting lineup.

Now I'm not saying Church isn't a great player. But Shannon dominated him in every statistical category. He is a top safety not only in the MAC, but in the nation, and he is just a sophomore.

With all that said, I am not upset he was left off the list. For all we know he could be a one year wonder. But statistically, he is up there with the best safeties in the nation.
