Ten days ago, Ohio University football coach Frank Solich received a contract extension that would guarantee the coach an annual salary of $400,000 through 2013. A copy of the contract obtained by The Athens NEWS via a public records request reveals the highest-paid employee at the university has the opportunity to pick up bonuses, with success and longevity as the variables.
Much like the initial contract in which Solich could have earned an additional $190,000 per season, specific bonuses based on coaching or team success are a part of the addendum. Solich will earn $25,000 if the Bobcats end the season ranked in the Top 25 of a national poll, $25,000 if he is named the National Coach of the Year, and $10,000 if he is named the Mid-American Conference Coach of the Year. Additionally, Solich will make $5,000 each if Ohio wins seven, eight or nine games, and $10,000 each if the ‘Cats collect 10, 11 or 12 wins in any particular season.
New to the adjusted contract is a $275,000 retention bonus Solich could earn if he were to stay with the school all five seasons. A pro-rated share of the bonus would be given to Solich if the contract were to be terminated early, essentially guaranteeing $55,000 for every season Solich stays at the school through 2013.
