I received an e-mail from this girl I had several classes with over the years at UAB. She told me about an incident that happened at the HUC Alumni Auditorium during the UAB Viewing Party during the 2nd Round game vs. Arizona. Here's her e-mail...

"I was at the HUC watching the UAB game on Saturday and when we were in there watching there were 3 guys sitting dead center third row sporting Arizona clothing. We were totally pissed by
this since they were at !UAB! sporting this crap!!! So as the game went on they continue to cheer for Arizona. Towards the end of the game people started throwing stuff at them and saying "GO HOME!"

"Well then a shouting match ensued and one of them shouted "I play f**king soccer for UAB & you pay my scholarship! I can cheer for who ever I want!"

"This really pissed me off at this point.

"I did a search on uabsports.com for the jerk-offs and all 3 of the guys were soccer players from Arizona..."

Hopefully everyone gets the point. I have to find out who they were from my source first, then I'll post their names and pictures.
Rebuke the scholarships and send them packing right now. They have no place at UAB. Especially as student athletes. I will buy the boxes for them to put their crap in! :chair:  :chair:  :chair:

You're right FA18, these kids have no loyalty to UAB.

I can imagine they see UAB as a stepping stone to a professional career or just want to play soccer. They probably had little or no knowledge of UAB before stepping on campus. Unfortunately, even though they wear UAB on the soccer field, that doesn't make them a fan of UAB basketball.

Yes, they were disrespectful for cheering for Arizona at a UAB-sponsored function. However, whoever started throwing stuff was way out of line and should be punished for their actions. You're definitely not going to make fans by acting like a jerk.

How many of you that were Aubbie or Bammer fans that went to UAB magically became a fan when you stepped on campus? I wasn't a Troy fan when I went to Troy, I became a fan with time and experience. You've probably turned these kids off from UAB for the rest of their lives by not giving them the time and patience to see how fun UAB could be.

So are we not to support UAB soccer now, because of three idiot members. Before we start lambasting the soccer program, let's let everything run its course. Notify Watson and let him and the soccer coach deal with it.

I agree with Sarabelle, they showed their stupidity by showing up at a UAB sponsored event to cheer for the other team, but it doesn't sound like the other students acted any better (I probably wouldn't have either).

Maybe its good that we don't play Alabama in any major sports. We would be very upset to see where a lot of students loyalties lie.

I agree with Bandgrad. We should "rebuke" their scholarship. I'll start. Bad scholarship, bad bad scholarship. 03-lol
Send it to me or show it to everybody
eVERYBODY WANT TO SEE THE GOLDEN GIRLS
ONE STEP AT THE TIME
No scholarship money from my part , now UAB need to do his part.
If you break it down, it seems to me that if it had been three regular joe students cheering for the opponent at a UAB sponsored event, it would have been the UAB fans who were in the wrong, unless there was something saying you could only cheer for UAB. Since it was student athletes on scholarship however, they represent the school and should not have been in public cheering for another team, even if it is their favorite team. Obvously they knew they were going to cause a problem and were looking for trouble. They should be dealt with severely by the coach, but THE SOCCER TEAM SHOULD NOT LOSE OUR SUPPORT as UAB fans.

It's not unheard of. Didn't this board or Blazernation have a poster from Georgia who played baseball for UAB but admitted that he was a diehard Bulldog fan.

What will probably happen from this is there will be no more HUC viewings of games, to avoid this kind of problem. They can't tell people who they can cheer for.
i will scan them in and post them :-)
i am still old school 35 mm guy so need sometimes ....
Just to chime in on this, I was there and I never saw anything like that going on unless it happened in the last 2 or 3 minutes when I could no longer stomach any more of the game. I'm not saying it didn't happen, but I wonder if some of this might, just might, be blown a little out of proportion. If not, send 'em packing!
Devil's Advocate. These guys were born and raised in Arizona. They accept scholarships to UAB. Along comes the tourney and, sun of a gun, the school they represent is playing the school they grew up loving. Tough call.

Last year I was in the players' families section at the Libery Bowl (long story, brother's kid.) The abuse was constant but good-natured as Hack played bombs away all afternoon. It would have been easy to return the abuse (considering the score) but I remembered where I was and took it like a man.

That being said, I'll still pull for the soccer team. Hopefully these ijits will have gained a greater appreciation for the alma mater when their done.

On the other hand, what did aforementioned ijits expect, screamin' cats at the HUC?
Nobody is telling them to root for UAB or that they can't root for another team but as members of a UAB athletic team they should not be rooting against UAB in a public place, especially at a function on campus in support of UAB.

Then again after my week long hell dealing with soccer players in the Dallas area (same as what happened last year) it doesn't surprise me one bit that they don't know how to act in a public place.
I absolutely agree that these boneheads should have remembered whose house they were in. Ah, to be young and stupid, again.

Fo' sho'.

I hated UAB when I first came here, but I didn't like Auburn and Alabama either.

I liked Georgia, LSU, and FSU, as those were the three schools I applied to before UAB (sadly, no chance of an out-of-state scholarship unless you have a 4.0 or higher).

I've been here about 2 years, and UAB has definitely grown on me...as you all know, I'm obviously a big fan!

I'm a total believer of rooting for the school you attend, whether you had a past favorite or not.

Same goes for anyone else...if you're a UAT fan all your life, then end up going to Auburn...time to switch to Auburn!
OK, so I've talked to one other person I consider a reliable source that witnessed the same incident.

I really enjoy UAB's soccer program. They do A LOT for the community and do considerable work in promoting UAB's name to young kids. Their soccer camps reach a huge population of youth that may not know a thing about UAB otherwise...
that said, do we want soccer players like the one's in the HUC incident assisting impressionable kids at these soccer camps? UAB should strive to put its best foot forward when working with the cities' youth and I don't think these guys make good spokesmen for the university.

You give them a stern talking to, and tell them to show a little decorum, but you can't revoke their scholarship for cheering for another team. They go to the media and the media has a heydey with it. There was some story about Bama and some similar incident earlier, and we all had a good laugh over it.

This is America guys, you have the freedom to cheer for who ever you want.
OK... Look at it this way - Your at the Company XYZ Christmas party. You have been making a good living at Company XYZ for about a year now. You regularly represent XYZ at national sales meetings and interface with customers all the time. Heck they might even consider you for a promotion if you play your cards right and make more sales than anyone in the Nation, and you have a chance at the record because XYZ is a top notch Nationally known company.

You step away and look down the hall from the banquet room, and you see company ABC is having their party on the same night, at the same place. Company ABC is you direct competition for selling widgets in this market. You see your boss's admin assistant at the party, you choose to booze it up a little and tell the admin assistant how great the ABC company is and how you always wanted to work for ABC. And you keep reiterating how great ABC is and never ever in a million years will XYZ be able to hold a candle to ABC in anything. Even when called down and the admin asst. tried to tell you that you were making an ass of yourself, you continue to berate the other party goers, all of whom work at XYZ.

How fast would you be fired on Monday?

Kick em off the team, don't renew their scholarship.
