04-bow Well done!
This is a step forward for Ohio and the MAC. With Frank locked up until 2013, Ohio can continue to improve its recruiting efforts and have stability in the coaching ranks.
all-time win list at Ohio
1. Peden 122
2. Hess 107
3. Widdoes 42
4. Grobe 33
5. Burke 31
6. Banks 22
7. Solich 19

Solich should be #3 on the list by 2013 and could pass Grobe as early as 2009. He might end up with more wins at Ohio than Nebraska.
Top two salaries among MAC head football coaches are Golden 575k at Temple and Solich 400k at Ohio.

That 400k for Solich is his base. Its 330k plus appearance compensation of 70k

His prior base was 257k (270k with appearance money), however with incentives it was much more.

5% for MAC East Championship
10% for winning MACC
100k for BCS Bowl game
5% for Graduation rate of 75%
10% for Graduation rate of 85%

Making all those milestones would have given him 434k+13k=447k

Now with the same qualifying criteria for bonuses with the new rate

529k+70k=600k with incentives.

He may be actually higher than Golden with new package.

A better measure than total salary for a strapped ath. dept would be dollars per win. If it gets to be close to $100k per win (like 5-7), that's losing.
If he wins big, it's a bargain. If he stays around .500, it's a disaster to be committed to that much money for that long when the rest of athletics are suffering from lack of funding.
good for him and the MAC... hopefully coaches will see that the grass isn;t always greener... You can be successful and be a long term MAC coach. I think it s a true level of a conference is if its good coaches stick around.
Always nice to see mediocrity rewarded.
I think Ohio's better years are coming. Ohio had always been at the bottom of the MAC in recruiting. Ohio moved from the bottom to 8th or 9th during the first couple recruiting classes under Solich. This years class was ranked at the top which shows how much progress Frank has made. I thought the team under achieved a bit on the field last year, but the program is moving forward. How fast it is moving is the question. Toledo, BGSU and Miami still are the premier programs of the MAC in terms of recruiting. Solich has atleast closed the gap a bit and has allowed Ohio to have a chance to win. For many years Ohio had a settle for moral victories and lopsided defeats. Now they are competing for 4 quarters against the better MAC programs. We beat BGSU and Miami in the same year last year. That hasn't happen often. Ohio is better off than 4 years ago. The expectations are higher for the football program. A bowl game is no longer a pipe dream in Athens.

John, i have to admit...i agree with everything you said in this post! i guess there is a first time for everything! WOW...is it snowing outside? LOL

we are definitely on the way up and yes it's going to take time. you don't go from below the basement to the top overnight or even in a few years, especially in football. i'm very glad to see Frank getting this well-deserved extension. now the rumors that he's going to a BCS program can stop.

I really can't even imagine what you think Doug Martin's salary has to do with Solich and this thread?

MAC Total Package with Monetary Incentives

13.Hoke (170k)

I think the commitment to pay is at most schools. The reason Miami is at the bottom of the list is because Montgomery inherited Terry Hoppener's old contract and his performance has been questionable.

Frank makes more money then half of the MWC coaches.

Does Ohio have Frank locked up with the new package?

Salary Package Comparables across the non-BCS:

Fresno State, Pat Hill (1,230,000)
TCU, Gary Patterson (1,219,000)
Boise State, Chirs Peterson (900,000)
Utah, Kyle Whittingham (678,000)
Ohio, Frank Solich (625,000)
Air Force, Troy Calhoun (600,000)
East Carolina, Skip Holtz (560,000)
Marshall, Mark Snyder (478,000)
Florida Atlantic, Howard Schellenberger (331,000)

Frank's new package is at the top of the MAC and would be mid level for the MWC or CUSA.

At Fresno, Boise, and TCU those coaches are making far more than Frank but look at what they've done at those programs. Those schools have all been ranked in the top 8 before so the money is well deserved.

There were some rumors a few years ago of Frank leaving for Colorado State a few years ago but that job doesn't pay too much more than Ohio (800,000). Ohio has won a few recruiting battles against Colorado State and the players cited better facilites at Ohio as one reason.

I think its safe to say that Ohio doesn't have to worry about losing Frank to the MWC.

Salary Package Comparables across the lower tier BCS:

West Virginia, Bill Stewart (800,000)
Ron Prince, Kansas State (760,000)
Northwestern, Pat Fitzgerald (750,000)
Indiana, Bill Lynch (625,000)
Washington State, Paul Wluff (600,000)

Solich is in the neighborhood package wise of some lower tier BCS schools. To leave Ohio Frank is going to command more than what those schools are willing to pay.

Additionally Frank is rumored to have a big buyout clause in his new contract like Butch Jones of Central Michigan. The buyout in Butch Jones contract was 500,000.

A lower tier BCS school would have to pay Frank 1 million a year plus a 500,000 dollar buyout all for a 65 year old MAC coach.

Frank has not even done enough at Ohio to warrant consideration by a BCS program on the field yet. If Frank does ever get to that point he is going to be 70 years old. Frank has hinted at retirement once he compeletes his Ohio contract in 2013. He will be 70 at the end of his contract.

My guess is Frank will retire after putting in 10 years at Ohio in 2014. There is really no point to working beyond the age of 70.

Joe Paterno is 82 years old but he is chasing the all time coaching wins record of Eddie Robinson (408). Paterno is 35 wins away from that number or four seasons at Penn State.

Ohio has the best conference record in the MAC East since Frank Solich took over. He has definitely improved out competitiveness in the MAC no question about it.

How far can Frank take the Ohio program? I think he can win a MAC Championship while in Athens and a win bowl game. He's won a MAC East title and a made a bowl game so he's close but not quite there yet.

By the time Frank retires the program is going to be in very good shape. Ohio is going to be a perennial 7+ wins a year MAC program.

The days of 1-2 wins a year like we did back in the 80's are over and a lot of Ohio fans yet don't realize it. Its not just Frank, Jim Grobe was fairly successful here in Athens too. We are going to continue to attract good coaches with facilities at the top of the conference and a highly respected Sports Administration program. The academics offered at Ohio will be very attractive to future players.

I know on occasion there are going to be sub .500 seasons for Ohio football. We aren't going to be unbeatable in conference every year like a top level BCS school. Maybe in our best year we make a BCS game, I don't know.
