Crean had to know that this guy might step down from all the Sampson fallout. Had to be in the back of his mind.
Crean seems to be a standup coach when it comes to playing by the book, but man, if you follow the program killing kelvin Sampson anywhere you almost have to expect some kind of violations. Sampson had absolutely no class.
Greenspan was a lame duck when he hired Crean. When he hired Sampson, he created a rift in Indiana. Those that supported the school and those that supported Sampson. Greenspan was also told if he screws up it's your ass. Hoosier fans have always been proud of the fact their program has never been on probation. Those kind of things are important here in Indiana. At least everywhere in Indiana except West Lafayette.

It's not so much that he stepped down it's WHY he stepped down. The 5th major infraction accusation from the NCAA themselves is a major blow.

That guy took down two programs. I have all the respect in the world for Crean, a hell of a coach and a good guy to boot, but he just walked right into a hornet's nest.
I bet the Indiana bunch are sorry they ran Coach Davis off now.....LOL
I doubt it, Hell. Aside from that improbable '02 run to the title game, he just wasn't getting it done there. Although, I always kinda felt bad for him, I didn't think IU handled it very well. Though, he wasn't technically fired, he was clearly forced to quit. I don't know, there's something underhanded about it, but what else could they do, I guess? If they wanted to make a change, maybe they were doing him a favor by not officially canning him. Of course in his buyout settlement he was required never to utter a disparaging comment about IU. Now that seemed fishy to me, but probably par for the course in college athletics nowadays. I believe Shawn Sutton had a similar stipulation when he was shown the door at Ok. St.
No, the only regret is simply the hiring of Sampson. 3-5 years now before they are a factor in college bball.

I agree. Mike Davis has so far shown that he is not a very good coach. Maybe he was not a good fit for Indiana. But with all of Indiana's resources for bb, there just isnt any real good excuses for Mike davis to fail there. Kelvin Sampson should have never even been considered at IU. Thats 2 programs in a row that he has brought down.
I liked Mike when he was at IU. He was a heck of a recruiter he just wasn't a very good coach. It wasn't his fault though. Mike wasn't ready for a job like IU. He even made comments when he was here about needing to be more mature. If Bobby could have stayed another 5 years perhaps Mike would have matured and been one heck of a coach of the Hoosiers. As it is Mike probably left IU as a better coach than he was when he took over the program just ebcause of the expereince he gained coaching there. I still believe he will be great somewhere for a long time.
