UAB has won 9 NCAA tournament games in its history? What do all nine have in common?

See if you see a common thread.

Game 1 - 1981 - UAB beats Western Kentucky
Game 2 - 1981 - UAB beats Kentucky
Game 3 - 1982 - UAB beats Indiana
Game 4 - 1982 - UAB beats Virginia
Game 5 - 1985 - UAB beats Michigan State
Game 6 - 1986 - UAB beats Missouri
Game 7 - 2004 - UAB beats Washington
Game 8 - 2004 - UAB beats Kentucky
Game 9 - 2005 - UAB beats LSU

The common factor? Chris Giles

Games 1-4 - Chris Giles was a player on the team
Games 5-6 - He was a graduate assistant coach
Games 7-9 - Coach Giles is an assistant coach.

We have never won an NCAA game without Chris Giles. Does this make him more valuable that Edgar?
Although we've only won 9 games that's still an impressive list of teams that we have beat in tournament play. How many of our wins were against higher seeded teams?

On the flip side, UAB has only lost once as the lower seed. In 1994. UAB was the 7 seed and lost to George Washington the 10th seed.
How did UAB make it to the elite 8 if we have never won more than 2 games in a tournament?
there were not always 64 (65) teams in the NCAA tourney...

plus, there used to be first round byes.
In 1982, it was a 48 team field and the top four seeds in each region got a bye. As the fourth seed, UAB needed one win to make the sweet 16 and two wins to make the elite 8.
Thanks for the clarification MB. I'm just a youngun. I'm only 20 years old, and I just recently started watching college basketball since i came to UAB...
