While we're asking....I wonder who the REAL Blazer basketball fans were?

We played that one the day after an ice/snow storm (1982?)--and didn't have more than a few hundred people there at the very-empty BJCC. In fact, there were only a few BJCC employees there, and we didn't even have ticket-takers that night--so the official attendance for the night was actually hand-counted. (Of course, the visitors from Utica, NY thought we were all nuts for shutting down the city for a little snow.)

Of course, that didn't come close to matching our game at Hawaii-Pacific the next year, at a high school gym, with an official attendance (hand-counted again) of 43. There were actually more players, coaches, and team officials there than there were fans.
BFTB,
do you remember the name of the high school gym we played Hawaii Pacific at? 43- The lowest attended game in UAB history.

I think that I remember that game. Back then my dad and I attended most UAB games. I remember us not going to a game because of the weather and me being very upset. My dad assured me that they were going to cancel the game and then when the did not... I wasn't very happy :) That may not have been the game but then again, how many times did something like this happen? It must have been it!

Since you are going back that far... that brings back wonderful memories of going to the games at BJCC with my dad. I can remember going to the South Alabama games and it seemed like there were 100,000 people there... remember, I was a kid and that place looked huge to me. Oh those were the days... UAB basketball and the Birmingham Bulls games with my dad!!!!
Nope, MB, I can't remember. Are you quizzing me, or did you want to know for yourself?

I'd bet I have it on an old box score in the attic, but it would be way too much trouble to dig up.

Not a quiz. A heartfelt desire to know. :D
Oh well. I'm going to have to visit your attic one day. 03-lol

BTR....it may have been that Utica game, or it could have also been the Old Dominion game the next season--when there was an ice storm. It was a big conference game for us (ODU was one of the top teams in our league then) and the ice storm was coming, and all the TV weather guys were telling people NOT to drive anywhere.

Since ODU had already made the trip, we went ahead and played the game. The roads were open, but hard to drive on, and I think there were only about 1,500 people there--when otherwise we would have expected about 10,000.

We won anyway.
I don't recall a Utica game, but I remember the ODU. I was stuck at the TKE house with about 20 bros and little sisters. Doing our charitable duty, we all skated, slid, whatever, down to the Red Cross and gave blood. Then we all got hammered (point of info, drinking after giving blood is a very cheap and fast drunk!). At the game, Herb Wenches was strolling across the court at halftime (shortly after his "they got coke in there" act at a Homewood apt complex), one of my fraternity brothers yelled "SNOWMAN!", which seemed to reverberate endlessly around the near-empty BJCC. Though Herb did a good job of ignoring the comment, EVERYONE in the building cracked up. Good ole Herb (silent H).
