I'm confused, why would he leave an established D1 program for a D2 program that is transitioning to D1? Was he being forced out of Ohio and they kept it on the hush? Can they actually pay him more than Ohio? If so, that would be sad.

EDIT: Well, that hoopwise article helped a bit.
wow, prayers really do get answered!!!

it's because he's been wanting to move back East ever since he came to Ohio.
This is a good move by TOS. With a new AD in town he had to realize that this was probably his last year in Athens anyway. He gets an 8-year guarantee close to home and a fanbase that will have some patience.
TOS wanted to move back East, and was heading into the second to last year of his contract. With a new, basketball-oriented AD in place, and staring at a possible rebuilding year, TOS had to know his days were numbed.

He has two years left on his contract at OU and you don't generally keep a lame-duck coach around. If he had decided to stay this year his career would have taken two possible paths. One, the Bobcats do very well and he gets a better job or two, and more likely, he does average or worse and he's out of a job and probably has to settle for an assistant job somewhere. TOS has been trying to get back East his whole tenure in Athens. He has a home in RI so this job makes absolute sense.
So his chances of getting an extension were slim. He didn't seem to have Ohio doing much outside of some above average winning seasons. I'm sure Ohio fans have been disappointed with the lack of postseason play and it didn't seem he was going to consistently get you there. I hope you guys get new blood and go outside of the assistant staff. Go out and grab some established head coaches like NIU and BGSU have done lately if you can afford it, unless Ohio fans want one of their current assistants.

His chance at an extension were none. He hasn't done a bad job as some of the OU fans like to think but he just hasn't done a great job either. After he took us to the tourney in 2005 each of the last 3 years has ended the same. Looking great midway through the year and then absolute collapse down the stretch.

OU fans are torn right now on whether to go outside the program. John Rhodes is a fan favorite and has definitely earned a shot but we have a new AD and I'm sure he has his list of guys he likes.
Wow, I'm shocked. Hopefully none of our recruits/players transfer out. Also, we need cast a wide open net in our coaching search. I guarantee that our new AD brings in someone good.
The Northeast Conference is a weak conference, especially in basketball. That's the conference where former EMU coach Jim Boone came from. My friend coached track at a school in that conference for two years and they always won.

Is OU letting him off the hook without paying to break the contract or will he have to pay something?

I haven't heard anything about that but I'd be surprised if they played serious hardball with him.
One thing of note. As of right now Ohio is scheduled to play Bryant in Athens on November 15th. It will be interesting to see if that game stays on the schedule.

I doubt it. Western Carolina was pulled from the schedule because of Larry Hunter.
Q. for OU fans:

Is there dancing in the street in Athens tonight? Or is it going on all over Ohio as few students are on campus?

Q2

Who do you like as a potential new HC?
I was time for O'Shea to move on and I think most Ohio fans were ready for change. O'Shea had a rocky start at Ohio with a terrible second and third seasons after a horrible upset at the end of his first year. He had 4 strong years the last four but the team struggled to win on the road which hurt with seeding come March. Lackluster performance vs Miami last few years miffed more than a few Ohio fans.

As for coaches the front runner has to be Rhodes. Boals an assistant at Akron has to be up there too. He was on the 1994 MAC championship team with Trent and Kent head coach Ford.

Could they land a name coach? unlikely but you never know. Gary Waters would be on my wish list, but I'm not sure he would see Ohio as a major step up from Cleveland State.
Jeff Boals has as good of a chance at the job as Larry Hunter. Look for our new AD to bring in an assistant from a major conference.

Schaus is just a year removed from a coaching search at Wichita State so I'm sure he's got some candidates in mind already. My bet is that someone will be brought in from the outside.
