It has been a tough day or week in D.C. We've gone through a week of some really tough weather (tornados and lightning strikes), problems on our subway system and today a massive power outage (which lasted for several hours) in downtown this morning.

And now the shocking death of Tim Russert.

I love sports but politics as much.

I never met Tim directly but I did sit near him and his son at a Washington Bullets game at the old Capital Centre I guess in the early 90s.

Interesting enough Tim was sitting behind the basket (not at center court) among empty seats.

Tim was a man of great faith. I'm reminded of the altar cloth from my sister's funeral: "Life is changed, not ended".

Tim, could you send an IM or two from heaven...

And has the Almighty shared with you who is going to be our next president?

So you didn't actually know him but you saw him once. Sweet blog.

But I saw him on TV every Sunday and a LOT last year and this year during this fascinating primary election season. He was my kind of guy. He, Chuck Todd, and the others have done a tremendous job every primary Tuesday.

I've had the chance to meet a lot of famous folks in Washington such as Justice Scalia, Senator Clinton, Webb (Va), Gov. Kaine (Va), Richardson (N.M.), (former) Mark Warner (Va), etc.

Recently I had a short list of people I wanted to meet (guess this was after Kennedy was diagnosed with brain cancer).

One is Cardinal McCarrick and another was Tim Russert.

I met Cardinal McCarrick two weeks ago at his 50th anniversity Mass of his ordination.

I hope that the Russert family opts to have his funeral Mass at St. Matthew's Cathedral and if so, I hope Cardinal McCarrick says the funeral Mass.

I don't get why people always think, it is cool to make these smart ass comments when people died. If you don't like politics, that's fine. But is it really necessary for that comment?
I enjoy politics. I am a huge fan of Tim Russert. I just thought it was weird statement and observation. You were in the same arena as a famous person yet didn't talk to them or have any connection to them? Awesome. What's the point?
I am also a big fan of politics and Russert was well liked and respected. He will be missed. Watching the election won't be same without him.

?

I guess my point was that he was there with his son and we was sitting in the 'cheap seats'.

Both say a lot about Russert.

Russert without his son would be unthinkable.

Russert at least back then wouldn't do a Jack Nicholson and sit in the most expensive seat in the house.

Agree, OUBJ. The coverage is going to be missing something big. I was really looking forward to hearing Russert say "President Elect Obama" in November.

Stretching.
It's a pleasure to watch someone who loves what he does and does it so well. Thank you, Tim, rest in peace.

Wasn't there a heat index over 105 degrees earlier in the week? I love D.C. but the humidity was ridiculous when i spent the summer there.

Yes.

We had near record temperatures with humidity last weekend.

We went from spring to a very opressive weather and humidity.

A week ago Wednesday or Thursday we had the worst band of tornados that weather folks had seen in 25 years.
For fans of Tim, all I can say is what a way to go.

Tim's family opted to have a private funeral Mass at Holy Trinity chuch in Georgetown rather then St. Matthews Cathedral.

Cardinal McCarrick said the funeral Mass according to press reports. (If I could pick a celebrant to say a funeral Mass for anyone dear to me it would be Cardinal McCarrick, the much loved archbishop emeritus of Washington).

This is selfish and I'll admit so but I wish the Mass had been public even if we could have watched and prayed it in front of our television screens.

Ummmm, stalker much? I think it was the correct decision for his family to have a private funeral instead of broadcasting over the airwaves for the Scary Steve's of the world to watch.
Gooch, you can't possibly wonder why your rating is so low after comments like that. Perhaps you are the twisted soul that loves to say obnoxious things or make fun of somebody's demise or a person's beliefs just to spark outrage. Too bad you can't get any attention any other way. It must be a sad way to go through life.

You ought to try not to be an azz. Just try it for a while. It's really not that hard.
Death sucks. That is all.
The city of Buffalo is in mourning. Tim was a graduate of Canisius College in downtown Buffalo.

He went to Canisius High School. He went to college at John Carroll University in Ohio.
That's right- John Carroll. Followed by law school at John Marshall-also in Cleveland.
