Expect it to be official in a few days. Looks like SJU, Nova and Providence will make the commitment to fund it fully with 12.6 scholies.

Hopefully we can keep this thread civil.
Also of interest to this board:

"Siedliski said none of the nine Big East members that currently do not play men's lacrosse has expressed an interest in jumping on board.

"The answer to that is a flat-out no," he said. "There has been a long period of poking and prodding and feeling everybody out, and nobody says it's in their strategic plan. It is not even a remote possibility at this point."
Good news. I wished the other schools got involved in this league. I would love to see a Big East Hockey Conference next but thats another thread. Not a fan of Lacrosse but it is a growing sport esp in Western Pa, its officially a sactioned sport by the PIAA.
I was only pushing ya'lls buttons and sparring a little. I didn't mean any harm. Just adding some flavor during the summer months. I am all for a BEast Lax conference. It'll be a great thing.
I think you take Penn St & Ohio St, maybe sign contract with B-10 network
BTW, the article had an error. The league is planned to start in 2010 not 2009.
Then, they are waiting to see if the split does in fact happen! 04-cheers

"The league will not have associate members, i.e. teams that play in the Big East in lacrosse only."

That's not going to happen. It stays in the BE family.

Correct--although I would make an exception for Johns Hopkins.

I predict UConn will quickly reconsider and add a team and ask to be accepted into the league after they build up the program from club status. Cincy, Pitt or L'ville might reconsider....:muttering:

I know you were just being funny, Mike. But, tempers on this site have been flaring, and I was just doing what you military people would call a “pre-emptive strike” 04-cheers

Exactly. Can you imagine how disgusting it would be to have Penn State or Ohio State winning a Big East championship? Ugh! No thanks.

Penn State will replace Notre Dame in the Great Western Lacrosse League to save its automatic bid. ECAC lacrosse is fading into history.
Here's some news on WVU's involvement, or lack of it...
The Charleston Daily Mail Wrote:WVU won't join Big East lacrosse league

MORGANTOWN - An idea more than three years in the making came to fruition Wednesday as the Big East unveiled its 24th sport and plans for men's lacrosse to debut in 2010.

Though athletic directors at all 16 member institutions approved the plan at last month's conference meetings in Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla., only seven teams will participate.

WVU is not among the seven.

"To be quite honest, we're just not at that point. It's not feasible. It's not prudent at this point," said Terri Howes, WVU's Associate Athletic Director for sports development. "We're in a position right now where we're pleased with where we're at and we'll continue on unless something occurs, whether it's financial or gender equity concerns. Right now, we don't have those concerns, though it is a fluid situation."

WVU has had a club lacrosse team for several years. All of the schools who will participate as part of the league - Syracuse, Georgetown, Notre Dame, Rutgers, St. John's, Villanova and Providence - already play varsity lacrosse.

However, teams can make plans to create varsity lacrosse. Villanova's women's team announced Wednesday it would join the Big East in 2009-10.

"The announcement has no effect on where we stand," Howes said. "We support the Big East and all its initiatives, as evidenced by the vote, but we're continuing on with our current setup."

WVU has 17 varsity sports after dropping five in 2003. In recent years it's added women's rowing and declined to add women's golf.

"When we did the exercise five years ago when the sports were eliminated, every sport was looked at that we sponsored and we looked at whether it was feasible to add sports at the time," Howes said. "It wasn't feasible with the structure we had. We went through the same process (this time) and things haven't changed."

Big East Associate Commissioner for Olympic sports James Siedliski said the conference's athletic directors began discussions to add men's lacrosse in 2005 and that the membership wasn't finalized until May.

"The directors had discussions among themselves about who else has a strategic plan for implementing men's lacrosse as a varsity sport," Siedliski said. "As it stands now, none indicated they have that."

If a Big East team does add varsity men's lacrosse, it must join the conference. As it is, the Big East is still in a good position. A conference needs six teams to give a regular season or tournament champion an automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament.

The Big East must request the automatic bid from the NCAA. If granted, the league will vote on whether the bid goes to the champion of the regular season or a tournament winner.

Syracuse, which won its record 10th national title this year, will shed its independent status. Georgetown, Rutgers and St. John's will leave the Eastern College Athletic Conference, Providence will leave the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference, Villanova will leave the Colonial Athletic Association and Notre Dame will leave the Great Western Lacrosse League.

The Northeastern Conference is also adding men's lacrosse and absorbing teams from various leagues, and while the ECAC, MAAC and CAA have plans to keep at least six schools, the GWLL will cease to exist.

Well, pre-emptive or not, let's call it out anyway. Existing BE schools are pulling out of various conferences into BE. That is just another sign the BE-16 is not going to split.

The BE is a huge, huge, huge, huge success. If I were a BE grad, you could never rile me because I am a happy clam.

Since only 3 current BE schools (ND, PC and UConn)

are DIV 1 hockey this unlikely to happen.

Not so sure about this. It's probably a Title IX issue. There are people at UConn bitching that Men's Hockey isn't scholly here.
