Fists, pizzas fly during student field trip

Updated: May 19, 2008 08:05 PM CDT
A fight broke out Monday morning at a Cordova entertainment complex during a student field trip.

Witnesses said police cruisers swarmed The Incredible Pizza Company on Germantown Road shortly after the fight broke out. Inside, students from four Memphis high schools, at the restaurant on a field trip, seemed to be out of control.

Ellis Shotwell, an employee at the restaurant, said the fight was between rival neighborhoods.

Employee Ellis Shotwell says the fight was between rival neighborhoods.

"It was rival neighborhoods- south Memphis versus east Memphis- gang related. I don't know what gangs they was in."

Ashley Maxie said she was inside the restaurant with her children when the fight broke out.

"They just started throwing plates and trays and knives and everything," she said.

Meanwhile, employee Michael Hollie's nose was cut during the melee.

"I got hit with a plate," he said. "We were trying to pull them off to the front trying to get them out of here, and they break out again. I'm trying to pull guys off each other...there's girls fighting, swinging at me. Next thing I know, here comes pizza and plates and everything flying. One busted, and hit me in the face."

Police said 13 students were injured, but no one was injured seriously. Citations were issued for two 18-year-olds, but it was unclear if they were students.

Employees said the students did have adult supervision. The incident remains under investigation.
I see school buses there on a daily basis... it was bound to happen. I have to blame this on the schools though... lack of adequate supervision.
I saw that last night, very sad. I was also wondering why they were there for a field trip?? When i was in school field trips had to be educational and for lunch you had to bring a bag lunch or something.
My friend worked there for a little while in the go-cart area. Was trying help a kid or something and told him to stay where he was on the course, just as he walked up, the brat ran him over while the parents laughed. I can understand the parents thinking it was funny, but the kid should've listened and my friend still has problems with his leg.

However, I'm told that place is fairly chaotic at times with kids consistantly running around unsupervised. Only end-of-school trips I ever had was walking from Macon Elementry to Skateland in 5th & 6th grades and going to Oxford, MS during my senior year of HS.
F'ing idiots. . .

Nope. Blame the lack of supervision on the establishment. My wife took our 9yr old to a friend's b-day party there about a month ago, and was appalled at the chaos. The fact that my wife was expected to pay to enter to retrieve her own child at the end of the party was ridiculous.
It was a harmless food fight being blown all out of proportion. Just good, clean fun.

I'm going out on a limb here, but I'm guessing that Memphis City Schools is probably aware of a gang problem on its campuses.

And I'm also thinking that 4 different schools with over 1,000 students being in the same building at the same time wasn't the brightest idea they've ever had.

As far as the pizza place goes, I bet they won't allow 4 schools to book the building at the same time anymore.

I don't really blame them for not having the personnel to watch over 1,000 kids.

BTW, here's a couple of questions for you:
1. How many people does it take to monitor 1,000 kids?
2. How many people should it take to monitor 1,000 kids?

When I was in school I can guarantee you that 1,000 kids in the same building wouldn't get out of hand.

But then our society wasn't so "progressive" in those days.
What's the big deal with 1,000 students. My local high school in Naperville, Illinois has 4,482.

Armed or unarmed?
Did I miss something? Is it closing?
"Ellis Shotwell, an employee at the restaurant, said the fight was between rival neighborhoods.

What did Ellis Shotwell say??

Beat me to it. I'd already copied the three straight lines that mentioned Ellis Shotwell (GREAT name, by the way; hope he never changes it to Ellis Getwell).
My thoughts on the kids today....

Just another sign that society needs to rearrange priorities. So much for progress. What we have now is not working.
Who payed for this trip? Isn't it like $20 to even get inside. We never got to go on field trips in high school (Shelby county Schools). So how can MCS afford this?

[/i]it might as well now.
Parents.

Amen. Whoever concocted this idea should be put on permanent leave.

My thoughts exactly. Where is the educational value in going to Incredible Pizza. One of the kids on our street, a fifth-grader, went on a field trip last week...to Peabody Place. When I was in school they made us go to the Opera once or Ballet, I get them confused. It's good discipline to have to sit through that.
