In praise of local rivalries

I understand the pecking order in college basketball and the need for UC to make as much money as it can off its home basketball games. And yes, it’s rare for a Big East team to play a road game at a MAC school like Miami. I get all that.

But I still believe there’s value in local rivalries. I still want UC to play Miami on a regular basis. Maybe I’m just an old-school traditionalist, or maybe I’m just old, but I don’t think I’m alone in this. I believe that college basketball fans in this area want to see UC play more local teams than just Xavier. Am I right? Do local fans care about these games? Or is it just me?

I’m not saying that UC has to play Miami every year, but there should be some way for that game to happen occasionally. Maybe UC offers a little more money on its guarantee and Miami settles for a little less and they face each other every two or three years.

And it’s not just the Miami game. There’s so much quality college basketball around here, so many opportunities for games that fans would love to see but that never happen. Ohio State and Kentucky won’t play UC, which will play Miami only at home and now won’t play Dayton at all.

It’s a shame.

What Rivalry?
Good Riddens to Miami.

As a non-Cincinnatian...let me tell you...no one has ever heard of Miami U. from my experience. I'd rather play someone a little more competitive.
Koch is a douche......we have no business playing at Mullet Hall...period. I'd like to see football series stopped as well....
i don't know about dropping one of college football's oldest rivalries... its always nice to kick those popped collared preppy tools

Exactly. UC leads the series 91-53, and Miami hasn't won since 1990.

I personally got a good kick out of that

It one of college footballs oldest rivalries, yet outside the Cincinnati area who even knows we have that rivalry? Teams like Oregon, South Florida, Missouri, Kansas...etc. that are becoming major players in CFB don't have "cherished" rivalries with a teams like Ball State, Florida International or Miami of Ohio. I think with regards to our football program we need to look to the future and not dwell in the past(which is honestly quite depressing) Ohio State would be laughed at if they were legitimate rivals with the Ohio Bobcats...
P.S I also like seeing an @$$ kicking of "those popped collared preppy tools" too! But maybe they can replace SEMO or EKU on our schedule and play them once every two years. Demote them from rivalry game to early cupcake warm up for week two.

Exactly.
Koch is horrid! I think the sorry p rick is even a UC grad.
Local rivals. (Bob Huggins) A game is not a rivalry unless you win once in while. Miami has not won a basketball game since 1990. So is that a rival game?
Football rivalry is better but the games in Oxford are poorly attended.
No doubt any UC vs Miami football game should be played in Cincinnati every year.
If UC wants to be a big time football program you must start acting like one. Playing before away game crowds of 15,000 to 20,000 with no regional TV is not something you need. Miami's attendance has fallen off and the Redhawk fans are not coming to Oxford like they should. Move the game to Cincinnati PBS or the Nip. bring back the real tradition of playing in Cincinnati. It was played in Cincinnati a lot longer then it ever played in Oxford
screw Oxord...they want to play us...see ya in Nippert.
