UAB loses basketball, football scholarships

UAB was penalized two men's basketball scholarships and nine football scholarships in the latest Academic Progress Rate report released today by the NCAA.

Both programs also received a public warning for possible future penalties.

In the first year that the APR has complete, four-year data, UAB scored 858 in men's basketball, down from 903 last season when the team avoided penalties because of the statistical margin of error. The football team had a score of 869, down from 906 last season when it lost one scholarship.

The cutoff score set by the NCAA is 925, which translates roughly to a 60 percent graduation rate.

Alabama and Auburn were not penalized. Auburn's men's basketball team scored 905, but avoided penalties "due to the team's demonstrated academic improvement and favorable comparison based on other academic or institutional factors," according to the NCAA.

Auburn football was at 953. Alabama football (944) and men's basketball (928) were above the cutoff score.

Jacksonville State lost two scholarships in men's basketball and the equivalent of approximately 5.7 scholarships in football. UAB lost half a scholarship in men's golf and received public notices for men's soccer, men's tennis and women's basketball.
Wow... not good
I guess talk of new recruits is moot, but until when?
Thanks again Zero, for all you did! 01-lauramac2
Losing 2 for basketball is significant, but we've got some good talent that we can put in those spots anyway. I'm a little more concerned about losing 9 for football where we're already low on numbers. Whoever is helping handle the academic side of our athletes needs to be fired. There's no excuse for it. We were in bad shape last year in the APR and it got even worse for this year.

We were going to be about 10 or more short on football. Don't see where it hurts for football other than pride.

Basketball stings.
We're already low on numbers in football... and you can only sign 25 per year anyway. So this means it's going to take even longer to get our numbers back up to full strength. We've got enough talent and enough spots in basketball that it shouldn't hurt too much other than a little shot to some depth. Given our recent recruiting, however, the quality of players we're getting should more than make up for a lost scholarship or 2. How long do these scholarship restrictions last, though?
I would question whether this may explain Reggie Huffman.

We signed all we can sign and were going to be 10+ low any way even if we were never penalized. Where it will hurt (besides image) if it carries over for one more year in football. 2009-10 season is the season we would have our numbers where they should be.

Possible Mouse but I'm afraid that divorce would have happened any way.

What I'm saying is that it depends on how it is enforced. If it's just 9 minus the total scholarship spots your allowed to have overall, then it won't hurt us that much. Then again, if they take away 9 scholarships from the 25 we would normally be allowed to sign in a given year, then that does hurt... alot. That would mean a signing class of only about 16.

Here's what the NCAA site says from the link posted above:

Football: Limited to awarding 22 initial athletic scholarships. Limited to awarding 76 athletic scholarship renewals.

Basketball: Limited to awarding 11 athletic scholarship renewals.

Golf: Limited to awarding 4.05 total athletic scholarships.
From the above-mentioned link...

Mens Basketball - limited to awarding 11 athletic scholarship renewals

Football - 1) limited to awarding 76 athletic scholarship renewals;
2) limited to awarding 22 initials athletic scholarships;

Mens Golf - limited to awarding 4.05 total athletic scholarships;
Sorry...already posted.
CRAP!!!
This is extremely bad, public relations wise. :domokun:
I just heard this on the ESPN national sports news update at the bottom of the hour.

Let the insults from other schools begin!

Remember that this score is based on the average score from the data submitted by the institution for the 2003-04, 2004-05, 2005-06, and 2006-07 academic years. Most of that blame can therefore be placed on Watson Brown, who was athletic director during most of that time, as well as the individual coaches of the sports named in the report.

Keep track of it here: http://ncaabbs.com/showthread.php?tid=297696
I did some quick reading and the penalties are based on 0 for 2 athletes, those that are academically ineligible and who do not return to school. We all know about all the football players that left after Zero left, most which I have been told by a player, left because of their grades. I think someone said that we lost about 10 guys who were not seniors from Zero's last team, which would line up with the 9 scholarship losses. Not so sure about basketball.

Either way, definitely bad PR, where the press won't acknowledge the issues of Zero's last few years that led to this. Hopefully Garrison and Mackin are working on interviews and statements right now about the things that have been put in place to improve all this. I know the football scores should improve based on Calloway's GPA rules. Not so sure about basketball, see Walter Sharpe and Mayfield.....
