Start's Richardson is a keeper! I love what she says about staying home.

Blade Story on Richardson
Excellent- ther's probably more talnet among Toledo's girl's teams than the boys. It would be great to see teams made up in part of local players.
Here is what Richardson's coach, Bob Brown, said about her in the Blade's All-City page earlier this year.

Quote:Yolanda Richardson School: Start Class: Junior Height: 6-1 Position: Center Key stats: Richardson is capable of posting a triple-double every time she steps onto the court. The imposing post player averaged 11.1 points, 11.7 rebounds and 6.8 blocks per game. She had single game highs of 20 points, 22 rebounds and 11 blocks. Richardson averaged 12.9 points and 13.1 rebounds in earning first team All-City and all-district last year. Coaches from the MAC already have Richardson on their radars. Coach says: "She is definitely the best defensive game-changer I've ever coached. She is very talented. She's meant a lot to her younger teammates. Her numbers went down a bit, but we didn't ask her to do as much. She just changes a game. She's a great leader. She is a great kid too. She's polite and very coachable." - Bob Brown.

She could be the start of a great recruiting class featuring a few more local girls. Yolanda's statements to the Blade should get a buzz going among some great young area players.
I wonder if she is related to former Start wrestling champ - Aaron Richardson. he used to beat up on former UT lineman Mike Lennix (Waite HS) pretty regularly in high school. Lennix was pretty darn good but he could never get past Richardson, who was also a state champ in the shot put if I remember correctly. Sounds like a great start to the recruiting class for UT
Now if we can add the Howard girl from Waite whose father Scoop Williams played at UT, they would make an imposing front line. I know BG is after Howard hard as they were Richardson.
If howard gets grades she's going to Tennessee or UConn. there are several other girls out there for getting though.

"Scoop" has a daughter old enough to go to college? Man, how time flies!
I think Howard is a Soph., but is already the BEST player in the City League.
MVP of the Indy/Ohio Girls All-Star game was a girl for "Toledo Catholic" high school. Scored 26- can't remember her name. Seems like she'd be a nice pickup.

That girl was super-quick guard Sharise
Calhoun
and she'll be playing for Oakland University next year. I don't know if Mark Ehlen recruited her at all but she'd have been an excellent catch.

Coach Cullop needs to work on 6-2 senior-to-be at Central Catholic, Brianna Jones who is a very strong post player. Jones and Richardson in the same recruiting class would be golden for Toledo.

Here's what Purdue University's scouting service said about Jones:

Quote:"The final big on the priority list is power forward Brianna Jones of Toledo Central Catholic. Jones is the kind of player that can lock down an opposing post, and is the perfect high/low post candidate. Jones handles the ball well away from the basket and can bring the ball down under decent pressure. Her offense has a little flash, mixing baby hooks with fade-away mid-range jumpers. Her rebounding skills are excellent, keeping the ball high and quickly turning for the outlet on the break. She is crafty at drawing fouls, and delivers from the free throw line."

She'll never make grades for Tenn or Conn. She'll be lucky to make grades at UT. She has a much better chance in going to UT if she can make anything out of a grade.

Scoop was All-Academic for the MAC when he played at UT.
That's nice, but he didn't pass that aspect of himself on to her. Grades will keep her from being special....anywhere.

My memory fades a little with each passing day, but I sure as hell don't remember Williams ever making any kind of academic honor roll while he was at UT. I believe he had to spend his first two post-high school years at a J.C. trying to get those academics in order. In fact the school was Northeastern Oklahoma A & M, once the home of former Toledo coach Larry Gipson
scoop was a real battler for UT. a real fan fave who earned his points and worked hard on the court. had nba potential robbed from him due to series of injuries. was in a horrible car wreck early in his hs career that tore up his hip and nearly killed him, got shot twice, both on occasions when he was near the target and caught bullets in his leg and then butt. plus, had leg injuries that caused him to rs his first yr at ut. then again, all his struggles probably made him a tougher player and maybe he would have been more selfish had he not lost most of his athletic ability due to misfortune

played on ut teams with a lot of local kids, including sean scrutchins and calvin white

the start recruit is a great get. if cullop can sign another top city league player then who knows the floodgates may open. then again, she hasn't signed anyone from st johns so maybe she doesn't respect local talent

All true and I share your memory experience but I'm almost certain on that one- tried briefly to do a search but didn't find anything. It came as a pretty big surprise for all the reasons you stated but I'm about 95% on this one.
OK, media guide doesn't have it but I think he was Honorable Mention or something so he may not get credit- sounds like a job for the SID. I just remember a friend from BG (yes,I've had some03-shhhh) being stunned whenm the announcement came out.
