Three more bowl games could be added

April 28, 2008

The NCAA News

The NCAA Postseason Football Licensing Subcommittee will hear proposals by representatives from Washington, D.C.; St. Petersburg, Florida; and Salt Lake City about adding three more bowl games to the 2008 Division I Football Bowl Subdivision calendar.

If approved at the committee meeting April 29-May 1 in Weston, Florida, it would bring the number of Division I FBS postseason games to 35.

Teams must win at least six games against Division I competition to be eligible to compete in a bowl. Over the last few seasons, the number of bowl-eligible teams has hovered between 71 and 73.

The proposed game in Washington, D.C. would be called the Congressional Bowl and would match a team from the Atlantic Coast Conference against Army or Navy.

The proposed St. Petersburg Bowl would pit a Conference USA team against a Big East Conference representative, and the Rocky Mountain Bowl in Salt Lake City would have a Mountain West Conference team against a member of the Western Athletic Conference.

Why do they want BE to play CUSA?????,,been there done that!
There are rumors circulating that St. Petersburg, Florida will be the site of a new bowl game. The St. Petersburg Bowl could be played on December 21, 2008 at Tropicana Field. At the moment, it looks like the Big East and Conference USA will be the conferences represented in the game. It has yet to be determined if this will replace any of the existing bowl games, but everything should be official by the end of the month.
Nobody else has spots open to play the Big East, hence it has to be C-USA.
Its being rumored by experts that it is going to be called Papajohns.com bowl II. Now its just speculation... either way its always a plus when the Big East gets another bowl game against the great teams that make up conference USA!
It's probably an unpopular opinion but I do not like the idea of more bowl games. 35 post season bowl games? It's a little much. It makes them more accessible and therefore, less prestigious.
They had to get this St Pete Bowl up and running for a couple of years before the door shut on new bowls. I think you'll see we will try to upgrade the competition during the next set of negotiations.

I hope.

Hopefully we will succeed in a major realignment of our pathetic bowl relationships.
