We are thinking about coming up for MEMPHIS IN MAY and wonder if there is any inside info someone can share with us on things to see and ways to get great seats, etc.
1) get there early to park (near peabody place or parking can be fun)
2) bring a lot of cash for beer/ food
3) if you get a chance, take advantage of all the new local restuaraunts that are downtown as well.
Sneak a ton of Gatorade in if you plan on being up front most of the day.
bring mudboots............
Is it too late to tell you to go to Jazzfest instead? Sorry but I've never looked forward to Musicfest less than I am this year.
first off, there's no such thing as "seats." it's a music festival, so be prepared to stand all day, especially if it's muddy.

it's supposed to rain either thursday night or friday, so plan on everything being muddy. wear clothes you don't mind being ruined.

take plenty of cash for beer/food, and in my experience, i've always taken an anorak just in case it rains again, and put my phone/license/etc. in the zip pocket. i also put toilet paper in there since the port-a-potties won't have any, and trash bags in case i want to sit on the ground.

it's a fun experience, but just be ready for the crowds...i'm 33, and i've felt too old to be down there for a couple of years now. i'm saving up my energy for BBQ Fest in two weeks.

I made the same decision when I was about 30. I'm too damn old to stand in line all night to get beer and take a piss. I guess I might need some Flomax.

AGREE 100%.

There are no seats at any MIM event.

-Wear shoes you do not really like but are comfortable (they will be ruined regardless of the weather)

-It will rain at some point.

-Definitely take toliet paper w/ you!!

-Parking sucks, only tip I can give you is the earlier in the day the better.
But Paul Ryburn will be there this year!!!

I love how he must have just finally heard of Lord T & Eloise b/c he mentioned them today.

Because Musicfest is the absolute worst venue for them to play at, he'll probably say "I don't see what all the fuss is about" instead of getting in your f-----g car and driving 10 minutes to see them somewhere in Midtown.

That's funny, I decided this year that I'm fed up with it...but I'm only 23. I always thought that I was mature for my age. I just can't put up with all the dumb prosti-tots and annoying emo-kids running around being "unique" anymore. Oh well.

But, I hope you enjoy your experience!!!
dallas, if you decide against coming to musicfest, if you know folks in town, you may want to consider coming to BBQ Fest. it's not fun if you don't know anyone, because it's all about getting in the booths, but if you DO know some people on teams or with connections to teams, it's worth the trip.

Agree (Yet again) and I cannot wait for BBQ!!

My thoughts exactly. I'm 31 and stopped going about 5 years ago. Plus, I'm not overly crazy about anyone coming this year.

I'd also recommend if you have a female in your group bringing some kleenex or TP for the purse. They ALWAYS run out in the port o pottys (and using those at MIM is an experience unto itself).

what is your infatuation with Paul? He is a pretty good guy.
Don't go. Unless you're really into mud, underdressed minors (arm in arm with throngs of abercrombie boys), long lines for over-priced beers, long lines for dirty toilets, etc, etc.
BBQ fest is where it is at..... it alot of work for just 4 days of fun trust me i have work my butt off for many yrs in my dads team...but its all worth it when you win 1st place.....i do love that trophy....dallas if u choose to come to bbq fest PM and i will extend a invite to you...DK used to come all the time but with him being at umass dont think him and cal will be there this yr
How come it rains right before every year. Seriously, it always rains like thurs night or fri morning every freaking year. My friends and I just call it Muddfest now.

I agree that he seems like a nice enough guy. I just think he's the most clueless, oblivious person I've ever encountered.

My morning isn't right unless it starts with his blog. The weird thing is I've talked to others who feel the same way, so his audience is definitely growing.
I read his blog as well (and I didn't until I moved to ATL in Dec, keeps me abreast of what is going on back home). He acutally is pretty smart and knows a lot about stuff (math, computers).

First, are you coming for the musicfest? If so, there is an error in some of the above posts. There ARE seats. In the blues tent, which is where I spend most of my time. It's also a good place when it's raining. It didn't rain last year, at least the day I was there, and as long as it's dry, it's fine. You will stand in line, depending on what you eat or drink, and to use the bathroom, but it's not too bad. There are alot of teens/early 20s there, so be prepared for that, especially the drunk ones.

I am in my mid 40s, and had stopped going years ago, but started back a couple of years ago due to my kids getting old enough. I take them, we get in Tom Lee Park, and they go their way and I go mine. We meet up once or twice to ensure everyone is doing okay, then we eventually meet up and leave. I wanted to be around while they learn the ropes before they start going by themselves.

Make sure to be there for the sunset. It's definitely worth it.

Bottom line: get the right mindset before you go in.

If you are talking about the BBQ contest, see above posts. Don't go if you don't know someone who can get you in a booth. I couldn't care less about the BBQ contest.

Sunset symphony is somewhat foreign to me as I haven't been in about 15-20 years.
