How many D-1 basketball programs in North Carolina? Name them please. Would you say they have more than any other? Start with the big ones first. There are a lot. I'm thinking of programs that have the chance to make some noise on occasion.

...and what are other states have loads of what you would call "significant" NCAA basketball programs?

Where are some areas where the proximity of big time programs is most acute?
I would say California and Texas, but only because the states are so large.

California:

UCLA, Cal, USC, Stanford

Texas:

UT, aTm, UTEP, Houston (once upon a time),

I may be missing some.
Certainly North Carolina leads the list with UNC, Duke, NC State, Wake Forest, Charlotte, East Carolina, Davidson, UNC Greensboro, UNC Asheville, Appalacian State, Campbell, and several others.

Indiana has several with Indiana, Purdue, Notre Dame, Butler, IUPUI, Valparaiso and others.

Ohio has a lot. OSU, cincinnati, xavier, Miami, Akron, ohio u, toledo, etc.

Strictly on population, don't overlook California or Texas.

Pennsylvania has a lot, just in Philadelphia with the Big 5. kentucky has a lot of schools that have enjoyed some success.

But North Carolina to me seems the clear leader.
