Isn't it nearly May???

Quote:From Fox News...amazing what this guy gets away with...

"There is new evidence of misleading information in Al Gore's Oscar-winning global warming film 'An Inconvenient Truth.'

"ABC News reports one of the most famous shots in the movie - of Antarctic ice shelves - is a fake. The film's visual effects supervisor says the film took the shot from the fictional movie 'The Day After Tomorrow,' which created it from Styrofoam and scanned it into a computer.

"'Yeah, that's our shot,' she says. 'That's a fully computer-generated
shot. There's nothing real in there.'

"ABC wanted to ask Gore whether it was wrong for a documentary to use a fabricated shot to make a point, but says he did not return their calls."
This at the same moment scientists are saying it's possible that the entire arctic ice cap may completely disappear this summer, the world is entering a severe food crisis (a little bit related to climate change, a lot related to the economic systems that are also driving climate change), and a chunk of antarctic ice shelf about the size of Ohio just broke of to begin melting into the ocean. but, I suppose we should be more concerned with whether Obama is acting like he's better than small town midwesterners because he used the word bitter in describing their frustration with chronically stuck local economies.
Oh, and Go Rockets! We'll miss ya Stan Good luck Coach Cross And, lord, may you just once grant us a defensive line

I had not heard that about the ice cap. Now I need to go search for a story on it. It had been reported for a long time that it was inevitable - didn't expect it to happen this quickly
As little as 15,000 years ago, the Great Lakes area was covered by glaciers. In fact, it was the movement of these glaciers that formed the great lakes. Global warming (undoubtably caused by the great number of cars being driven on the highways at that time) caused these glaciers to melt leaving us with the greatest sourse of fresh water in the world. Yeh - I hate global warming.
I guess it more an issue of how much warming will occur - and whether the atmosphere changes so drastically that droughts become common. I had heard that certain sections of the world would be thrown into perpetual droughts that would make the dustbowls of the 30's seem like a walk in the park.
My point is that global climate has been changing without the influence of man since the formation of this planet. Over the eons, sometimes it’s hot, sometimes it’s cold. Sometimes it’s dry, sometimes it’s wet. This has been happening for millions of years - long before we dominated the planet. Rather than man overreacting and actually thinking that he can do anything to alter this normal cycle, perhaps his energy should be put into adapting to it. Overreaction with well intentioned solutions could well be worse than no reaction at all.

Fits with BG's quote:

Quote:I would remind you that extremism in the defense of liberty is no vice!

What about erring on the side of safety? Doing nothing in light of all the science is more than amazing, it's unacceptable.

Hey, NMRF, I don't necessarily agree with Bean-
Counter either but did he deserve to be called BG? That's pretty harsh, man. 03-wink
Here's a trustworthy source:

Quote:The minority report by Republicans on the Senate environment and public works committee represents a rearguard action by climate change skeptics after the White House agreed last week to join international attempts to create a successor to the Kyoto protocol.

Akin to the same crowd that gave us talking head generals on national news outlets proclaiming the righteousness of the Iraq invasion and occupation. Yep the same ones that had talking points from the Pentagon while serving on defense contractors' boards.
clearly climate changes over time regardless if humans are involved in the process. however, it's also clear that we are poisoning our air by burning billions of years worth of decayed organic matter (petrolium) in a couple centuries.

of course, humans will adapt as best they can. the issue is human adaptation is a conscious social process. how we understand our environment and adapt to it often defines how a population survives. right now we're doing a crappy job of recognizing the situation and responding well to it. Although, some in toledo and elsewhere are becoming aware that 21st century quality of life and prosperity will be partially determined by whether that community does a good job of managing local resources.

melting ice caps leads to rising ocean and estuary levels which salinates drinking water and ag lands in coastal areas. it also aggravates flooding and destabilizes building foundations and infrastructure. and of course it's extremely important to people who live in the arctic, on low lying islands like Tonga or Manhattan or who depend on healthy reefs for seafood and ocean based economies.
