Why did they close it off so people can't run on nit anymore. I've been out of pocket for a while, so when I got back in town I went to go run around the track and it was locked tight.
I saw they redid the field, but it wasn't the people running around the track who were damaging it. Besides it was one of few places the people in the community could go running, day or night.
maybe liability???? just a thought....
I think they're trying to maximize the longevity of the new track. Those surfaces can be really expensive.
UAB has a publicly available running track, at the rec center.
Liability was never a problem for over the ten years I've used the track...as far as longevity. That new material is pretty durable (except to foot ball cleats). Just asking. As far as the new rec center, I'm not paying 7-10 bucks to use what was once free to the community.

I guess it was just one of those things that made the community a lillte closer to the School.

I think you answered your question there. There's no way to make sure someone doesn't come out there with cleats or something else that might tear it up.

They didn't spend the millions of dollars on the rec center for no one to use it. You get more out of that $7, and you can join for $30 a month if you're alumni.
Seriously, the Rec's a very nice facility. We've had memberships since it opened.

That's the silliest thing I have heard in awhile. Do you refuse to pay $3.20 for gas because it used to be much cheaper?

I still buy gas, but I don't drive as much. I still go running, but I don't go to UAB as much. I've been to the new gym/rec center, it's nice. But I already use a gym for 19$ a month. it's silly to pay more if I only need to use less...but thats neither here nor there.

But I can see why they would close it, even if I don't agree with it. I was just wondering if anyone knew why they closed it off.
It's closed basically for the same reason you can't play pickup baseball at Young Memorial - it's the track teams home field and they want to take good care of the expensive new surface.
