6 years, $50 million with $24 million in bonuses

UNREAL!

Expect Roddy to be in camp by tomorrow
No way the dominos fall that fast. With luck he'll be in camp by the weekend, I'd be very surprised if it happens much faster than that. When #1 signs a huge contract, all the following GM's curse the SF GM and try to weasel their way down a bit and save some money.

It's the nature of the game.
I love all this about "how the game is played" and "this is how it works.

I could see that maybe what the other receivers were doing would affect Roddy; I don't see how a QB picked No. 1 overall and 26 picks ahead of him affects him.

The Patriots' first-round pick, drafted No. 32 overall, signed today before any other first-rounders.

Two other teams signed their first-round picks today - Oakland (23) and Philadelphia (31).
Happens every year though LJ... they sign in dribs and drabs, often using the contract terms of those drafted ahead of them as a signpost and measuring stick.
Mora hopes White signs contract and reports soon

FLOWERY BRANCH - Though Jim Mora offered several qualifiers in support of Roddy White, the Atlanta Falcons' head coach hopes the agreement of three other first-round draft picks Monday will expedite negotiations with the rookie receiver.

White's contract holdout began Monday, but as San Francisco reached terms with No. 1 overall pick Alex Smith, the pendulum could swing in favor of more deals consummating. Other teams traditionally wait for the top pick to sign before other contracts fall in place.

The New England Patriots, at No. 32, were the first team to budge when the two-time defending Super Bowl champions signed guard Logan Mankins. The Oakland Raiders did the same with cornerback Fabian Washington, the 23rd overall pick, and Philadelphia with defensive tackle Mike Patterson at No. 31.

"I've never really been one to worry about who wasn't here," Mora said. "If you want to pin me down, I think every day he misses is one he'll never get back. ... Every day missed is an opportunity lost for him and the team, but I certainly understand the business aspect of contract negotiations. I know Roddy wants to be here. ... He's a smart kid. I'm sure he'll pick it up."

White, who led the nation in receiving last year at Alabama-Birmingham, is the last Atlanta pick unsigned. His agent, Neil Schwartz, didn't immediately return phone calls.

Defensive end Chauncey Davis signed his deal Monday as the Falcons were stretching, and the fourth-round selection from Florida State was on the field as practice got underway. Linebacker Michael Boley also agreed to terms, but Mora excused him so the fifth-rounder from Southern Mississippi could work out child custody arrangements.

Boley is expected to arrive this morning.

I would agree that is the case for some - but not all.

If that was the case across the board, they would sign in order. Everyone would wait for #1, then #3 and down would wait for #2, etc.
Per Skip Bayless on Cold Pizza this am, Smith's contract contains 20% more guaranteed money than Manning's last year. The typical yearly increase has been 10%. By not signing Smith before the draft, the Niners owner cost himself some cash.

This "precedent" of more guaranteed money should have a ripple effect for all unsigned 1st rounders.

Look for Roddy to sign soon after Mike Williams, who was drafted #11. What other receivers were taken in the top 20 and where?
Braylon Edwards and that guy from Oklahoma.
With most camps opening the 29th, the ball should start rolling for receivers very soon. I know that right now, no one's sweating Williams not being signed by Detroit, but Roddy's a little different given Atlanta's early camp.
Roddy's situation is also difficult because he has a legitimate shot at starting and they have a preseason game in Tokyo in less than 2 weeks.

I think that with #23 signed and with guys drafted after him in the first round having signed that there should be a good enough gauge for them to agree on a contract.

I expect it to be about 5-6 years for a little over $8 million.

For Roddy's sake I hope they get it done today. Like Mora said, every snap he misses is one he can't get back and I know Peerless would rather be the one getting those snaps.

Roddy needs to light the fire under his agent's butt to get it done.
I hope Roddy signs fast also, but the other players signed are an offensive guard and a cornerback. Both are normally paid less than a receiver on average. A few days shouldn't hurt, but weeks will.

While Roddy can't get the snaps back, neither can he get lost money back.
The #28 pick signed today with the Chargers.

His deal is 5 years and will pay him a little over $7 million, with close to $5 million of it guaranteed.

That seems a little on the low end but he is a defensive tackle.

I'd expect Roddy's deal to be close or just over $8 million.
I don't think the deal was that monster in terms of nfl top pick contracts. That's been about how the markets been going the last few years.

2005- Alex Smith 24 million guaranteed money
2004- Eli Manning 20 Million
2003- Carson Palmer 14 or 16 million (can't remember...think 14)
2002- David Carr 11 million
2001- Michael Vick 15 Million

I don't know what C. Brown got. Vick is the only contract that doesn't fall in line.

It's safe to assume that Leinart or whoever (especially a qb) will sign a 30 million dollar gaurantee contract.
