I know this thread will turn into a Watson bashing thread before it is done, but let me remind everyone that Watson has said repeatedly that he prefers coaching to being AD.
Quote:MADISON, Wis. -- Barry Alvarez will step down as Wisconsin's football coach after the 2005 season to become the school's full-time athletic director.

Alvarez assumed both roles in April 2004, but said he some day planned to step away from coaching to lead the athletic department full time.

"I believe it's the right time," Alvarez said Thursday at a news conference.

Badgers defensive coordinator Bret Bielema will take over in 2006, Alvarez said. Bielema joined the Badgers last season after working as a co-defensive coordinator, linebackers coach and recruiting coordinator at Kansas State.

"He's a rising star in our profession," Alvarez said. "Bret Bielema is the right man to replace me."

Alvarez was hired to turn around a program that had only five winning seasons in the previous 27 years. The Badgers failed to break the .500 mark in his first three years before Alvarez led Wisconsin to the Rose Bowl in 1994, the team's first since 1963.

He has a 108-70-4 record during 15 seasons at Wisconsin, the best mark in school history. His 7-3 record in bowl games includes three Rose Bowl wins.

Wisconsin was also penalized by the NCAA for a major rules violation under Alvarez's watch in 2000. Twenty-six football players were suspended for receiving unadvertised discounts at a shoe store and another 21 were required to do community service for breaking NCAA rules.
After next year Watson will be the club.
Yes I totally agree that Watson Brown should step down as head coach but still stay on as AD. As an AD you could not ask for anyone better than him, but as a head coach, well I will just say he really makes me wonder where his head is at on the calls he makes. But as a AD I truely believe in all of the Div I teams he is at the top in what he is able to do.

GO BLAZERS GIVE THEM HELL :gun:

Again, as BlazerMatt said, he prefers coaching - not administration.

If he ever drops one, it will be AD - not head coach.
He can't admit he's not a good coach and just step down.
Watson's is a good coach, Sax's. Open your eyes and see who could come in with as little as UAB has and do better. One day it's going to happen and I hope I'm here to read the crap that will be put on this board dogging the next coach. All coaches have up and down years or may be at a bad school that doesn't make them bad coaches. This goes for Watson and Bolt look beyond wins and loses, what do they have to work with. We have good players but not great with few exceptions face the facts.

Has anyone been to the locker room lately, weight room that every sport men and women use, meeting rooms, the list goes on and on. I've talk to some coaches to see if myself and others can up grade the locker room with a lager tv and maybe a couple of couches to help the players we have now.
It pains me a great deal to see the fans we have now cut on this coaching staff instead of looking for ways to help them build a program.

Sax's I was going cut on you but then bickering between fans wouldn't help the cause either. We all need to think things over before we react with a quick response.Go Blazers

I'm not disagreeing that WB has done some great things here--he took a infant football program and brought it into the national spotlight.

However, I personally believe he has taken us as far as his skill will allow.

Watson Brown's D-1 Coaching Record
1983 4-6-1
1984 1-10
1985 3-8
1986 1-10
1987 4-7
1988 3-8
1989 1-10
1990 1-10
1995 5-6
1996 5-6
1997 5-6
1998 4-7
1999 5-6
2000 7-4
2001 6-5
2002 5-7
2003 5-7
2004 7-5

UAB is 0-6 over the past 3 seasons when sitting on 5 wins.

His entire career is a story of mediocrity until he came to UAB--he's seen marginal success here, and it's time for him to go, ESPECIALLY if this season is a bomb.
Also, UAB has given up 104 points and 1029 total yards of offense in two games (Tulane & USF)
Sax's one question. Where has Watson been as head coach and had the tools and the backing to have a wining program?

He had better facilities during his day at Vanderbilt, and he wasn't any better at coaching back then...maybe even worse?

Watson has done what he could with the facilities he has--however, he had a VERY good team last year, but he conditioned the players incorrectly, causing unnecessary losses (this was brought up last season).

Say what!?!

Ok, I'll bite. Shouldn't that be like 1-6 or something? How are we 0-6 with 5 wins in 3 years if we had 7 wins last year? I agree with you though...it's a bad record while sitting on 5 wins.
By the way, welcome to the board, oxford93! We have a :newbie:.
Enough said "Vanderbilt" that speaks volumes. Thanks Sax's

Sigh.

I really didn't want to get into this, but...

Sax, you do realize that Watson Brown has coached at several places where nobody wins.

Vanderbilt
Rice
Cincinatti

I've taken shots at WB before, but anyone besides me think we're thiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiis close to turning the corner?

I think this is potentially the best team UAB has ever fielded. Let that settle in for a minute before reading on.

We've so much as got the $EC commish telling the world that they want no part of anyone in CUSA. Part of the reason for that is that UAB has become damned scary to the annointed ones.

I just don't want to go upsetting the apple cart just yet. I think continuity right now might have long-term implications.

Oh, and one more thing, welcome aboard oxford! There's Yoo Hoo and ginger snaps on the table in the corner. Help yourself.

Since you choose to post his overall career record, how back backing him up with a few facts.

Watson has coached at Rice and Vanderbilt. Since you seem a bit underinformed about Rice, the Owls football program has taken more beatings than the little blue smiley guy on his side :chair: :chair: :chair: . Watson went 4-18 at Rice. Rice's Football History makes Vandy look like a powerhouse.

Since you are an obvious SEC/Bama fan I hope you are a bit more steeped in Comodore history. Many good coaches have gone to Vanderbilt to ruin their career. To escape from Vandy and still be employable is a huge plus for any coach. Watson went 10-45 in 5 years at Vandy.

So he went 14 - 63 in 7 years. Thats 2 wins a year, for you non-math majors. Every conference has a traditional doormat, and Watson has coached at 2 of the worst.

Watson has taken our program from its infancy to being respectable. Until we start going 2-9 for a couple of years in a row I am going to remain to be a Watson backer. I know the substandard facilities he has to work with in the middle of this powerhouse football state, and I say he is doing a masterful job. I would wager that our Football facilities are probably the worst in CUSA. I can't say I wasn't disappointed when we lost to Tulane and South Florida, but we are still growing. Our players play hard.

Negative. I'm a die-hard UAB fan.

No way...last year's team was better, even on paper.
When I win the lottery, I'll help pay for a new athletic facility and on-campus stadium. This will put us over the top.

Seriously though guys and gals, if we put the Steel Shield Defense of the 2000-2001 years with the 2004-2005 offense, UAB would be a Top-20 team. Do you not think that Watson isn't doing all he can to make that happen?

I think it's incredible that we get the recruits that we do considering the terrible condition of the facilities, or just the lack of facilities in general compared to schools like Jacksonville State and Samford. I'm glad we're Div-I in C-USA and not D-IAA because we'd get out-recruited by them.

We're lucky to have what we have at UAB and Watson Brown is a huge part of that, both as a coach and AD.
Thanks everyone for the welcome there have been some good post. Let's stay on the positive side for the most part and build a wining program. Go Blazers!
