I have spent a while this evening listening to various portions of the tapes that were released by Fire Department New York and the New York Police Department.

It's frightening, to say the least. To hear firemen and police officers describing situations and what was going on...to hear firemen talk about coming out of a tunnel from Brooklyn to Manhattan, and being unable to drive because of the clouds of dust and smoke.

I fail to understand why the New York Times and other media outlets felt the need to go to court and have these tapes made public.

I know some media folks and others want to find a way to blame FDNY and the NYPD, but none of us can realistically imagine what those men and women went through that day. It was bad enough watching it on TV all day that fateful day - it was almost as bad listening to some of the tapes.

I can understand family members, particularly of fire and police officers who died that day, wanting to hear them - maybe to understand what loved ones were doing at the time that they died. But other than that, I don't see why these tapes were made public.

May God bless the families of the men and women who lost their lives that day - especially those who died trying to save others.
