McCain criticizes Cunningham
BY HOWARD WILKINSON AND JOHN KIESEWETTER |

After his campaign rally in Cincinnati today, Republican presidential candidate John McCain apologized for remarks by conservative WLW talk show host Bill Cunningham that McCain said he thought were offensive to Democratic candidate Barack Obama.

"I take responsibility and I repudiate what he said," McCain told reporters after the rally.

Cunningham came out on stage to whip up the crowd as he often does at Republican campaign events in Cincinnati.

He repeatedly referred to Obama using his middle name -- Hussein -- and said that Obama was a product of the "Chicago-Daley mob.'' McCain was not on stage when these remarks were made but was told of them later.

"I will not tolerate anything in this campaign that denigrates either Sen. Obama or Sen. (Hillary) Clinton,'' McCain said.

Cunningham said later that he stood by his comments at the rally. He told his listeners: ‘”I’ve had it with McCain. I’m going to throw my support to Hillary Rodham Clinton.”

Cunningham, a conservative Republican who also hosts a Sunday night syndicated radio show, said he was asked Monday “by a McCain operative” to introduce the Republican front-runner at Memorial Hall.

He spoke to the crowd and left, without meeting or speaking to the candidate, because he had to do his WLW-AM talk show at 12:30 p.m.

Cunningham said his remarks about Obama was “the same stuff” that he says “to you listeners” on radio, including referring to Obama by his middle name, Hussein.

On Jan. 10, MSNBC host Keith Olbermann named him one of the “worst persons in the world” for calling Obama “Hussein” on his national radio show.

Hamilton County Prosecutor Joe Deters, who spoke at the rally, said Cunningham's comments were not surprising.

"Bill does this kind of thing a lot at Republican events, and we're used to hearing it,'' he said.

That is pretty funny. LMAO
How pathetic is it that the media is settign the rule that you cannot refer to Barak Hussein Obama by his actual name?

And it is even more pathetic that Sen McCain is going along with those rules.

That is OK, let the golden child go through the primary untouched by the liberal media with much popularity. After that the pendulum will start to swing the other way.

Did anybody see SNL making fun of media commentators, reporters
for their obvious bias?
I don't think it's that big of a deal. It's pretty irresponsible on Cunningham's part, but what do you expect? He's a radio talk show host.

Great read.
I think Willie is pretty entertaining. Anyone know what he had to say about this later?
I think McCain is pretty classy for just coming out and saying it. you didn't here Cunningham repeating WIlliam Jefferson Clinton over and over... or George Walker Bush.

He called him Barak Hussein Obama over and over to tap into people's anti Islamic sentiments (even though Barak is a christian..stressing his name really has some Islamic connotations)

McCain handled it with class i was impressed.
Cunningham just said on CNN that he is joining Ann Coulter in supporting Hillary Clinton over McCain.

It's easy to say that now that signs are pointing towards Hillary not getting the nomination.
I think it is funny how he dissed CNN, NBC, CBS, ABC calling it the Clinton news Network, Nothing but Clinton Network etc....Right in front of some of their correspondents.

I have been listening to Willie since 89'. He has called clinton Williman Jefferson Clinton many times. He has layed into GW more times than I can count. It is amazing that this is even a story, it is just funny. Man the media freak out about everyting.
I saw him on CNN last night, Willie is a trip. He's an entertainer, and that's what he was doing, entertaining.

If by signs you mean signs big enough to be read in outer space by a person who usually can't see things unless they are really close or in very large type, I would say you are right.

Its a story b/c to even raise an eyebrow of criticism in the direction of Obama these days is to risk being dubbed a racist or hate mongerer. Willie's comments were dumb but to act like it was some huge deal for him to use the name Obama's own parents gave him, is overreactionary. Nobody dare criticize Mr. Perfect. And he is the perfect candidate. He's so short on experience that his voting record is too short to have hardly any meaning, that there's hardly anything to look at as far as his history. But make no mistake, he has an agenda. Its the most anti-employer, anti-free market program imaginable. Take a look at today's WSJ for a peek into it. Listen to his radio ads: CEOs make too much money, everyone should get into college...blah blah blah class arguments, rich vs. poor. Funny, how a state legislator could make enough money to buy a 3.5 million dollar mansion in Chicago. Of course his slum lord buddy Rezak bought the adjoining garden for $600,000 which is a bit odd, but the national media is too busy writing about college kids fainting at the Barock concert to actually look at any of this.
Kinda odd that McCain said he never met Willie, but Willie says they met on several occasions. I have also heard Willie use middle names for nearly every president many times, especially Hillary Rodham Clinton and George Walker Bush.

Willie does that all of the time. Some people have selective hearing.
It is possible that McCain met so many people at some of these gatherings over the years that he doesn't remember everyone. I am sure that they have met before but probably briefly.

McCain is lying to distance himself from Cunningham.

Coulter and Cunningham are correct McCain is a relatively dim bulb, his whole "maverick' schtick is not going to be a fit in the presidential role and he comes across as a hostile, ignorant, xenophopic "yank" when he talks about foreign policy.
