ESPN announced today the Kent State’s February 23rd BracketBuster game at No. 21 Saint Mary’s will be televised nationally on ESPN2. The game is schedule for an 11:59 pm EST (9:00 pm PST) start time.
We can have a long thread if we continue to post on this until gametime.
To get a win here will take an all-around great game...offense, defense, intangibles. They play very well as a team, move the ball well, shoot well, but at the same time if we play our game, and slow the pace a bit a win here is certainly obtainable.
midnight game is a great excuse for a party!
Ray's Place will really be rockin'!
Here is the St. Mary's board. Not a big board but very nice, knowledgeable, folks. A far cry from some of what we are used to in some opposing fans. :sylviaplath:

Time to bring this back.......any chance of an at-large requires a win! To the left coast we go.
This guy did a pretty good job of summing us up;

Quote from St. Mary's board:

What you can expect from Kent State is defense, depth, and quickness. The Flashes are one of the top defensive teams in the MAC, holding opponents to about 42 percent field-goal shooting. They're also tops in the league in steals, with an average of 8 a game. (They recorded 15 more tonight against Buffalo.)

Kent's rotation goes about 8 or 9 deep, depending on how much Rashad Woods plays. As you figured out at the start of this thread, guard Al Fisher is one of the Flashes' top players. His strength is breaking down defenses and getting to the basket. His perimeter shooting is average, and he's prone to turnovers.

Kent's other two top players are forwards Mike Scott and Haminn Quaintance (known as "Q"). Scott is the team leader. He averages around 13 points and just under 6 rebounds a game. Q is the team's best defensive player and likely will be named MAC Defensive Player of the Year. He averages 10 points, nearly 8 rebounds, and 2 assists a game. He's also first in the conference in blocked shots and seventh in steals. Q's biggest problem is that sometimes he's not mentally into the game and, as a result, plays passively. I doubt this will happen against the Gaels because Q seems to be at his best against high-quality opponents.

An emerging player in Kent's starting lineup is guard-foward Chris Singletary. His scoring is now in double digits (10 per game) and he averages 3 boards. At 6-4/225 pounds, Singletary is a bull. He's good at taking it to the basket and either drawing the foul or dishing the ball off to one of the post players. Singletary has also developed into a solid defensive player. The major drawback in his game is that he tends to get into foul trouble.

Other Kent players:

Jordan Mincy - Sometimes starting point guard, sometimes back-up point guard. Very little offense but he's excellent on defense. Kent's best man-on-ball defender.

Rodriquez Sherman - Sometimes starting shooting guard, sometimes back-up shooting guard. Not much of an offensive threat but is a good defender.

Mike McKee - Three-point threat, though he hasn't been knocking down shots consistently.

Julian Sullinger - Undersized post player. He was solid last year off the bench, but is playing less this season in part due to Q elevating his game and the emergence of Singletary.

Rashad Woods - A transfer who's in his first season with Kent. He's an offensive player who can hit shots from the perimeter, but he's struggled so far this season and hasn't played much the last two games.

The Flashes aren't big, as the tallest player who sees quality playing time is 6-8. But what they lack in size, they make up with quickness and athleticism. Both Scott and Q can jump out of the gym. Expect an aggressive man defense and a lot of hustle from Kent. The Flashes' coach, Jim Christian, preaches defense and maximum effort, and it shows up in the team's play.
KB122...WOW...Not so sure that any one of us could have summed it up much better.
Given that post was that guy's first post on their board, I'm sure it had to be a Kent fan who wrote it. Or someone who watches us a heckuva lot.
It was Jim Christian, from his blackberry on the bus home!
You really think Kent athletics is going to spend the cashola to provide JC with a Crackberry...ok, maybe his personal Crackberry.
any team with their own remote controlled blimp probably buys blackberry's for their coaches. he may even have an iphone!
I personally wrote that review and emailed to the guy. He is my cousin. He posted it word for word. Plagiarism is not frowned upon in California. 03-lmfao
Now for the truth. This guy is in our jocks. A+ for his homework. 04-bow
as you may know.. st mary's blew the doors-off Firestone Fieldhouse in malibu the other night en route to 100-64 thrashing of pepperdine.

"Patrick Mills scored 18 points, Todd Golden added 15 and 10 assists, and No. 23 Saint Mary’s hit a school record 17 3-pointers in a 100-64 win over Pepperdine on Monday night.

The Gaels (23-3, 10-1) went 17-for-29 from beyond the arc."

i know we'll come out & contest the 3-pt shot. will be great credit to the team if we can shut-down this high-flying st mary's offense.
one of the st. mary's guys was on a sportsline thread bragging about the box score for that game. He forgot the fact that Pepperdine is not very good this year and obviously forgot to play defense for most of the game. 17/29 is good shooting from the three but it's not as good as our 15/24 that we shot against NIU. I think we match up well with St. Mary's and it will be a fun game to watch. At first I was hoping we don't lose by much if we lose, now I don't know if I'll be satisfied with a close loss. One this pretty clear, St. Mary's fans are as worried about us as we are about them.

Crap, why didn't I go to grad school at UCLA!

As far as St. Mary, what do we know about the place we are playing in? Is it ruthless? It was definitaly beneficial for us to schedule UNC to get used to that atmosphere.

A saw one St. Mary's game on TV. Their gym is a "cracker box", holds a little over 3,000 (relying on announcers knowledge). Crowd seemed overzealous and rowdy although it was against their conference rival. Brackebuster game on TV should bring out the same type of crowd. Lighting doesn't seem to be the greatest, appeared to be a little darker than most gyms.

I saw the Gonzaga game too and that place looks like a cave. I hope JC gives the boys plenty of gym time because I'm sure it's hard to get used to shooting under banks of 40-watt lightbulbs.

LOL

don't forget, we played here 2 years ago (2 games in 2 days.)

key to the game: don't let their star players have open looks. don't let their star playes get in a rythm. if we contest their shots & hustle for the rebounds, we'll be more than fine.

our players want this game. i see good things happening.
