I'm surprised nobody has mentioned this, so somebody correct me if it is being discussed already.

Did anyone read McManamon's article in the ABJ?

I know the Akron game is over and done with; I'm ready for the Broncos on Sunday. Hopefully we can reverse the results from last season's game in Kalamazoo.

However, I was interested in hearing some opinions on this.

Did anyone else think that he was blaming Q for the incident and only the Flashes were "classless" as in "So much for winning with class".?

Seems like it was written by a fan of a team that just got schooled or even by a kid writing for the school newspaper, not by a professional writer for the main paper in a city. Not very professional, he's certainly no Terry Pluto.
Yeah, I saw it. I thought it was too much of a "homer" article, considering both teams are, technically, in Greater Akron. It wasn't at all objective - seemed to be written by an Akron "fan", rather than a reporter for a fairly major newspaper.
I'd agree. Certainly was not a professional journalist. Probably a student blogger like that Razor guy. Very amateurish style as well. He clearly wasn't pretending to be objective.
I'm deeply disturbed at some of the Akron fan's postings after the article... OMG

This one for instance:

"Haminn Quaintance?"
No thank you, I'll have the ham & cheese.
Seriously, this punk will be out of college soon and back to jacking pizza deliveries, along with collecting da hood tax soon.

What a bigot

Here is my favorite post and my response below it LOL

By the way, to all of those who refer to Kent State as "Can't State" the "e" in Kent makes an "eh" noise versus your "ah" in Can't... Lucky for you there's such an easy slogan for you guys to use.

Now its 8:36pm and you are still a classless Akron fan.

(I know that I shouldn't even indulge myself in their ignorance, but there comes a point that just pisses me off)
As Axe mentioned, if you want to read a load of sh!t read this Razor guy. He's an Akron Law student. It makes me hate lawyers even more...LOL

Pay attention to the Kent/Akron game notes:

Somehow, the Mark Twain quote comes to mind:
"Never argue with an idiot. A bystander doesn't know the difference." The best public service we could do is to never read him.

Quote:He's an Akron Law student

Which may prove the mantra of the white shoe law firm recruiters in ranking Schools of Law : "First Tier, Second Tier, Trade School."

Talk to anyone in a first or second tier School of Law, like Case, and see how much time they have to write seventh grade insults in a barely noticed blog. You already know the answer. Which brings us back to the question of why Akron U. students of all manner seem to have so much free time on their hands?
This idiot is plain and simply an a$$. Sure we're "mercenaries"...guess the Zippers don't ever have any transfers on their teams. It will be a pleasure sweeping them this year.
Thought this was a little more objective than the trash in the ABJ...and for EA none the less. Also, Dials is a punk, glad someone else noticed.

Seniors are expected to be leaders, but the Akron-Kent State game Wednesday night was just about the poorest display of senior leadership on both sides of the court seen in quite some time.

No question, Akron senior Nick Dials is the inspirational leader for the Zips. In Rhodes Arena, he pumps up the crowd with his gestures, his hand-waving, and "popping" his Akron jersey.

But a senior has to know that in an opposing arena, those same theatrics and more are taunts. A senior should know that in an opposing arena, you silence a crowd, not stir it up. His halftime throat-slashing exit in a packed-tight MAC Center, after hitting a 3-pointer to give the Zips a 10-point lead, was not Dials' brightest moment.

This was compounded by nine Akron fouls for 18 Kent free throws inside the final 2:16, as the Zips desperately tried to get back into a game they let slip from their grasp. In the last seconds, two more seniors failed to distinguish themselves.

In the final 5.1 seconds, when the game was effectively over, two Kent State free throws gave the Golden Flashes a 71-67 lead. Akron then committed its 23rd turnover of the game, throwing the ball out of bounds. Kent's ball under its own basket.

Short of a steal and a miracle four-point play. The game was clearly in the books. No question Akron would go hard for a steal. But once the ball was secured by Kent, no reason to foul.

Didn't happen.

Akron freshman Steve McNees committed a hard foul on Kent senior Haminn Quaintance; 4.6 seconds left. Instead of walking to the free throw line, Quaintance reacted to the foul.

Earlier in the game, Kent sophomore Mike McKee had done much the same to Akron senior Jeremiah Wood with a hard foul on a breakaway. Wood composed himself under the basket, and Kent players separated McKee from the cluster of Zips. The officials assessed the appropriate (intentional/breakaway) foul, and the game played on.

That example was not followed later on.

When McNees committed his foul, Akron senior Quade Milum did not run to his teammate. He ran to Quaintance. That escalated the final seconds instead of defusing it. Once the game was over, Quaintance showed a glaring lack of senior maturity as well with his failure to shake hands with the Zips as his teammates did.

Afterward both coaches said what has historically been an intense rivalry played cleanly at a high level should not be overshadowed by the final seconds.

"A heat-of-the-moment thing," Akron's Keith Dambrot said. "Everybody should be forgiving."

Kent's Jim Christian said; "I don't want the end of the game to be the story of the game."

It's too late for that now. But it's up to some seniors on both teams to clean up their collective acts, and make sure it doesn't happen again.
Good objective article by EA, of all people.04-jawdrop
that might be the best bit of writing ive ever seen from Elton

and for all the Akron fans that are still whining about what went down and who was wrong or right i think this article shows there was enough blame to go around on both sides. when youre on the road you dont make gestures towards the crowd, When dials hit that shot at the end of the half the best thing he could do is go in the locker room without doing anything. I think fans need to take the same approach, when youre on the road you wear your colors proud and you cheer for your team, any action other than that and you are asking for a retalition and its not going to be a nice one. So when the Akron fans get upset that our fans swear at them or whatever, remember that when you are trying to pull childish pranks.
and im not saying that its ok use profanity in chants, im just stating that for every action there is a reaction.
Just a thought, but I find it interesting that the NCAA allows teams to shake hands after a game. Not to date myself but when I played it was not allowed for fear there could be trouble following an intense game(and this was before the trash talking that is part of today's sports).I have seen fights following football games at both the high school and college levels.I watched the final period tonight of a CCHA game between BGSU and Notre Dame in which Nd was ahead 6-1 late in the game when things got chippy and a fight broke out(actual helmets knocked off-punches thrown which is unusual for college hockey) and 6 major fighting penalties were issued. At the final buzzer there was still pushing and shoving and the referees made sure to separate and usher the teams towards the locker rooms. I guess my question is,is it maybe asking for trouble to have the teams immediately shaking hands after a heated contest? Seems sportmanship isnt what it used to be! I agree that may be one of Ellen's finest peices ever.01-wingedeagle
i hear what youre saying back in a flash and i know these guys are young and in an intense rivalry game but guys(specifically Q) have to know how to show good sportsmanship. No one's, perfect and i bet Q even feels a litlte dumb for acting like that after the game

McManamon took Plutos place and most of his articles are homer based. that was one thing about Pluto I liked he was very objective and told it like it was. home team or not. and at least he showed up for Kent games other then just the Akron game. I wonder how many games Mcm has been to, to make a judgement like that. surprisingly no mention of Dials throat slash gester or the fact that if Milum doesnt get involved Akron gets the ball down 2. talk about a punk Milum has goose eggs in the score book and then decides to get involved in a scrum at the end of game. as EA said way to show sr. leadership.
It has been well documented how the Akron Beacon Journal has gone downhill over the years. Its peak was probably sometime in the 1980's, probably the early 80's. Heck, maybe even before that. At any rate, it was once simply an outstanding newspaper, and it no longer is. The problem was money (isn't it always money?). The articles over the years have been about the more important news and opinion areas, but I assume the sports department has declined at least as much as the other areas of the newspaper. So, I am not surprised at all that such a poor column would appear.
McManamon is a terrible columnist. I rarely read him any more.
Not being in the area anymore, I don't read the BJ. I used to read it every day when I lived there, last in the early 80's. It was maybe the best paper in Ohio for a time and did some of the best investigative reporting in the country for a paper its size. But the print media has really suffered in the last 2 decades. I have friend who teaches at UA (really!) and he has told me the paper is a shell of its former self. If this guy is what passes for their sports columnist, the end is not far away. I'm shocked, really. I would have sworn he was a UA student writer. No wonder Pluto bailed.
I wonder how much the circulation has dried up in the last 5 years.
Its sad that he mentions Q more than any of the players on the team he obviously roots for. Its just some writer with the power of the pen, who probably graduated from Akron, who might have been there when we snubbed Akron's championship hopes in 1998, that has the ability to take his frustrations out on someone.
If he wants classlesness, lets talk about how Akron's football team tore apart our sideline looking for the Whgon Wheel, that Kent's captians carried to the middle of the field to give them.
