Akron fans are so obsessed with Kent? Seriously, look at their fan forum, its like they can't get over us, and its not just recent, its like every day they say something about bashing Kent?

Here are my guesses:

Jealousy? :muttering:

Couldn't get in? 05-ban

Its really like 10 people who have no friends? 03-lmfao

Feel free to shed any light onto this topic but its almost sad how much they spend time bashing us.

Oh thought this is interesting too, anytime you type the word Kent into their forum, it automatically changes it to "Can't" hmmm... complex?

It seems to be typical behavior in a sports rivalry when one team has enjoyed a lot of success and the other hasn't. The latter's aspirations to be as successful as the former fuels this kind of obsessive behavior. I see something similar with OU fans in the rivalry with Miami. They want their school to be on par with Miami academically, they want their sports program to be on par with Miami, they want the same amount of attention. In effect, they want to be Miami. Funny thing is, I doubt Miami fans even care what goes on at OU. Likewise, at the end of the day, I doubt Kent fans really pay that much attention to Akron.
Well, I think there a lot of historical reasons. Don't forget, for much of Akron's basketball history they played in small school divisions. They have been in the top division, currently called Division I, less than 30 years. So, when they played their neighbor, Kent, they were also playing a "big" school. Add the fact that Kent has always been in the established MAC, while Akron, after leaving the smallest school division, always bounced around. For some older fans, 1998/99 may still leave a bad taste in their mouths. That was supposed to be Akron's year, but they collapsed, and Kent ultimately won the MAC tournament. But mainly it is envy over Kent's far superior record over the last 10 years. Their 3-game sweep last year wasn't enough to get past that envy, especially since they lost the MAC tourny and didn't even get invited to the NIT. Plus, I think the reputation as being an inferior urban school, whether true or not, may play some role.
