Laing Kennedy announced at a reception Saturday night for chairback season-ticket holders that Kent will be traveling to play Kansas next season in basketball, a couple days after I read the item below on the collegeinsider.com site [http://www.collegeinsider.com/knoll/]…

THE MID-MAJOR WISH LIST….[here’s the item for the MAC…]

“Mid-American: A conference regular season champ that takes care of business in the MAC tournament. A win over a top 25 team from a major conference. Some better programs in the Western division. A salute to Miami coach Charlie Coles for doing more with less seemingly every year. A moratorium on road games by MAC teams against Kansas…”

If I were Laing, my wish would be the MAC lives up to its promises on advancing basketball before it imposes restrictions on Kent State. For 3 years, soon to be 4, we've heard about scheduling standards, bringing back the RNR Shootout, conference wide scheduling strategy, blah, blah, blah...and none of it happening.

Laing is the consumate gentleman. He is also the consumate KSU basketball admnistrator. On to Kansas and who cares what the MAC wants.
That's my thoughts on an STO contract. To hell with FSN, Chryst and the MAC office. We need to what's best for Kent State. I am betting that CSU is going to get a heck of a lot of games on STO next year. They have 10 on this season.

Why would the MAC restrict Kent in basketball?

Anyway, big picture, Kent's scheduling was really good this year. They played a lot of top teams from other mid-major conferences (Xavier and St. Louis (A10), Illinois St (MVC), Cleveland St (Horizon), George Mason (CAA), Hampton (Mid Eastern) and UNCG (Southern). Exactly the type of teams that they should schedule, games that will prove that Kent is among the very top elite at the mid-major level.

Still, I think the conference wide scheduling thing won't work and Kent should do what they want.
How is going to N.C. or Kansas and getting blown away doing what's "best" for Kent State? I shudder to think about Kent playing Kansas without Mike Scott and Q. Sounds like a recipe for disaster to me.
If we want to even hold up half a thumb to them, were going to have to A) have Garcia or BP develop into a quality center, or B) recruit a quality player similar to a Q type, to go along with the signing of Ronnie Moss.
I expect Kent to use their remaining scholarship to sign another guard.
God gave Noah
The rainbow sign
No more Tar Heels
The Jayhawks next time!

I expect us to sign 2 players, at least 1 JC player.
The lack of a big guy is one place where losing the two scholarships through the APR fiasco hurt us. Sure, Shane Ross didn't work out at Toledo, but would have liked to watch what JC could have done with him.

We also lost a big forward that played with Derrick Rose in the CPL to UW- Milwaukee who would have been a freshman this year. He would have helped.

GF- 2 more or 2 including Moss?
Technically, they only have two scholarships to give (at the moment) ... One is Moss, and I'm about 95-percent sure the other will go to a junior-college center. One I know they've watched would be a very nice fit - a 6-foot-8, long-armed, athletic center to step in for Q.

They've identified post as the No. 1 need for that second scholarship.
That's good to know, we'll need that.
Thanks for the information, David. You would think that Christian should be able to get a decent quality low post player from the JUCO ranks. That player would know he could step right in and start for a good team. For those of you who are old enough to remember, there was a similar situation 24 years ago. Kent lost the MAC title game by 2 points to Miami, and the only real need to contend for the next season was to replace center Marvin Robinson. Coach Jim McDonald's only recruit, however, was a guard named Mike Mellon. Mellon didn't contribute and was soon gone. The season was a disappointment, and McDonald was later quoted in the press as saying, "I guess I didn't do a good job of recruiting."

Two more in addition just because I am guessing that one more will open up. Do not read too much into this as I am on one of my wild speculative bents. To be blunt, I do not see the coaching effort to keep every member of the team happy. I think that Waters was the best at that of anyone that I have ever seen. Remember how he respected the inherited players like Brook Bright (even tho he did not fit) and even invited them back for special events after they graduated and called them family members. I do not see that in JC and I have a feeling that at least one, if not more are feeling like rejects. In other words, I think that JC would like to cull a player or two. I do not intend for this to sound negative towards JC. As most of you know, I have been called his biggest fan. I do observe very closely. JC wants to win with every bone in his body. I would just guess that if he could build by subtraction, he will find a way to make it happen. Again, this is wild speculation and I do not claim inside info on this one. We will just need players, not player, next year.

GO FLASHES, BEAT THE SNOT OUT OF ZITS (how is that for a picture?)
