The below is from today's Oxford newspaper. Now, I agree that Coles is a good coach, but I have never been on the band wagon that says that he is some coaching genius. My questions are (1) if Bramos had a previous injury, why is he still in the game with 8 seconds left? (2) how can a D-I team not have any zone ready, even if rarely used?

Michael Bramos scored a game-high 23 points for the RedHawks, but was forced out of the game when he reinjured his left ankle with eight seconds remaining.

Tim Pollitz added 18 points, and Hayes finished with 16, including 12 in the final two minutes.

Kent State held a 39-23 lead at halftime, and according to Coles, "I don't think the game was in doubt."

The Miami coach said he may start making changes to his defense.

"We don't have a zone defense," he said, "but we should've gone to a zone in this game. It's just so hard after you don't have a zone for so many years. It's hard to change your habits."
Not that it was mentioned, I'm surprised MU didn't go to a zone (though I see why now). Miami could have really stymied Kent's offense with a zone. Listening to the post-game show on the way home was brutal. I couldn't understand a single word of Charlie's postgame comments. It's sad really. If Miami continues on this path, I don't see him sticking around. They really need to make a change before their program gets buried.
I haven't seen Miami this season, and know they are stumbling right now, but I would be very, very slow to count Charlie Coles out. He is a wise old fox and knows the whole thing boils down to the MAC Tournament and will have his guys ready to play tourney ball when they need to.
And the 20-20 hindsight on Bramos is crystal clear...ain't hindsight wonderful?
Quote:"We don't have a zone defense."

"We don't have a zone defense." This must be misquote. Dd he say "We don't have a zone defense ready" or We don't have very good zone defense."?

To say "We don't have a zone defense" is analogous to living in Ohio and thinking it won't get below freezing so I don't need a winter coat.
Charlie is old school. He believes there are two kinds of defenses: man-to-man and lousy. I believe him that they haven't spent a minute practicing zone in years. They also play poorly vs. the zone as well.
