It looks as if Nevada has clinched the W.A.C.'s Commissioner Cup award with their finishes this weekend in track & field (women's) and Softball. They have pushed ahead of Boise State and the only W.A.C. sport left to decide is Baseball. Boise State does not have a baseball team and Nevada does. So it looks like Nevada will be this year's winner of the W.A.C.'s Commissioners Cup trophy. MUCHO CONGRATULATIONS!! :clap2: :clap2: :clap2: :clap2:

Congrats to Nevada. I know that some of their fans will want to give it back by the way some of them derided the award last year, but I
Winning the cup is not much of a prize but it is something, I guess. I think it is good for the WAC as a whole to have a different champion every year.

BTW thank you on the kind words BoiseStateRules...classy post.
Great job by Nevada.

...and don't count these guys out at the baseball tourney. They could win it...

...and head to a Regional.
Six Pack Wrote:Look...I was the fan who 'derided' it last year, so let's not lump all opinions of Nevada fans based on one fan.

You weren't the only one, there were several. I never said all Nevada fans. "Some" does not mean "all". You surprise me, after your posts last year I didn't think you understood what "classy" meant.
Final standings?
With baseball the only sport left to be decided, here's a projection based on current standings (baseball pts in parentheses).

Nevada - 93.5 (6)
Boise St - 86.5
Fresno St - 76 (7)
Hawai'i - 75.75 (4)
Utah St - 69.25
Idaho - 62.5
SJSU - 59.75 (2)
NMSU - 52.75 (1)
La Tech - 48 (5)

The only positions in question are:
1) a very close race for 3rd; UH probably has a slight edge over FSU, because the tourney will likely even points out a bit, and FSU probably needs to win it.
2) SJSU has an outside shot at catching Idaho for 6th; they need 5 pts to pass UI, and can earn a max of 5.5 (need to move up in the standings and advance to the tourney championship, at a minimum).

Who else then? Really...I'd like to know. If there are several, let's name names.

And you knew what I meant...of course I didn't mean that you were implicating every single Nevada fan...but if you want to argue semantics, we can sit here all day and debate, Bill Clinton style, over the meaning of the word 'is". But you knew what I meant.

I offered an opinion. I stand behind that opinion and that opinion hasn't changed in light of Nevada winning it this year. I said that the Commish Cup isn't that big of a deal, and I also drew a comparision between WAC teams in which ALL teams in the WAC compete. I'll probably do the same this year as soon as I get a chance. For some reason, that really upset you...and obviously still does, seeing how its now a year later and you're still upset. Let it go man...let it go.

I'm sorry if my opinion doesn't agree with yours. If that means I'm not "classy" then so be it.

If you love the Commisioner's Cup so much, why don't you marry it? 02-13-banana
All I know is Boise State and Nevada have been the top two teams in the Western Athletic Conference for the last two school years according to the Commissioner's Cup standings. Last year Boise State won it and Nevada was second. Boise State finished last season with 96.5 points and Nevada garnered 93.75 points.

This year, with only Baseball remaining, Nevada has a one point lead over Boise State with 87.5 points to Boise State's total of 86.5 points. Nevada will likely finish 2nd in the WAC in Baseball to Fresno State (Nevada and Fresno State are in the finals and Nevada would have to beat Fresno State TWICE in order to win it whereas Fresno State has to win only one game to win it). Sooooo, assuming Fresno State wins the Baseball tournament then Nevada will garner another 5 points and finish the school year with a total of 92.5 points to Boise State's 87.5 points. Fresno State will finish a distant third with 75 points (Assuming they win the Baseball tournament). And Hawai'i will be right behind Fresno State with 74.75 points at 4th place.

It certainly is a lot different than it was two years ago. In 2005 Rice was the winner of the W.A.C.'s Commissioner's Cup (101 points) and Fresno State was 2nd (92 points). Boise State was a distant FIFTH (67.5 points) and Nevada finished in EIGHTH place with only 61.5 points.
Actually, Fresno will pick up 7 if they win today, and Nevada 6 (due to Sac St being an affiliate baseball member). In that case, I think points would be (baseball points in parentheses):

Nevada - 93.5 (6)
Boise St - 86.5
Fresno St - 76 (7)
Hawai'i - 75.5 (3.75)
Utah St - 69.25
Idaho - 62.5
SJSU - 62 (4.25)
NMSU - 52.75 (1)
La Tech - 46.75 (3.75)

If Nevada wins today, Fresno and Nevada will each finish with 6.5 baseball points, and Fresno and Hawai'i will tie for 3rd.

You may be right but I thought that the maximum amount of points were determined by the number of teams in a particular sport. In Baseball there are only six teams total in the W.A.C. that have baseball teams aren't there? So shouldn't the winner of the WAC Baseball tournament be awarded SIX points?? Rather than seven?

And if Sacramento State is not counted then shouldn't the maximum amount of points be five for Baseball.?

As to your scenario of Nevada and Fresno State both getting 6.5 points......I don't see how that is possible. If Nevada wins today it is my understanding that a second game will be played and the winner of that game will be the winner of the WAC baseball tournament. If Fresno State wins today then the tournament will be over and they will take 1st place.

Lastly why would La Tech and Hawaii be awarded the same amount of points for Baseball when Hawaii went farther in the tournament than La Tech did?

There are seven baseball playing schools. FSU, UNR, LTU, UH, NMSU, SJSU, and Sac St. The six all-sport playing members will be awarded points based on where they finished out of the seven. Sac State basically just adds a point to any WAC school that finishes ahead of them.

As kingpotato said, there are seven teams, although only six qualify for the tournament. Even though NMSU wasn't in the tourney, they still factor into points.

In Baseball, Basketball, Volleyball, and Soccer, points are the average of regular-season and tourney finishes. 2nd place in the regular season and 1st in the tourney, or vice versa, thus earn 6.5 pt. La Tech was 3rd in the regular season and tied for 5th in the tourney: (5+2.5)/2=3.75. Hawaii tied for 4th regular season and had sole possession of 4th tourney: (3.5+4)/2=3.75.

Points for Track, Golf, Tennis, Swimming, etc. are based entirely on the WAC championship, while Football is the only sport based entirely on the regular season.
