I remember Huggs saying White could dunk a volleyball while the ball was under his chin.
he can do it.. I remember watching him do the between the legs from the free throw line.. no matter what anyone says he is the best dunker in UC history.. Levitt had some memorable ones.. but none as rediculous as Flight White.. I remember watching him one time jump from almost 1.5 feet behind the free throw line and dunk it.. I am convinced if he worked at it enough he could have dunked from the three line.. that man was one AMAZING JUMPER.. and it helped that he was a quick runner.. if he had olympic jumping training a three point line dunk would have been possible..
The Best dunk I ever seen was his double pump Dr J slam from the free throw line in the Mc Donalds All Star dunk comp.

I'm going to disagree on this. White had some great contest dunks, but he also missed 90% of his attempts to go through the legs behind the line. His in-game dunks were great - when he was on a fast break.

The Helicopter was by far the better in-game dunker. I still think that put back when he swung on the rim was one of the greatest dunks I have ever seen. Not to mention his dunks in the NCAA dunk contest were pretty amazing although he didn't win. He did jump over 3 ball racks off 2 feet just stepping over the point line.

Melvin Levett could definitely grab a quarter off the top of the backboard, my friend even told me he saw him do it a couple years back. Its hard to compare the two, white is a one legged jumper and levett was a two legged jumper, so each dunk is going to look different, but be freaking sweet in their own way.
I think Mel was the better dunker "in game" and a better showman. But it is very difficult to argue against White being the better aerobatic dunker. With no one else on the floor, White did stuff unheard of. Mel on the other hand would dunk in traffic with no fear. Plus Mel owns arguably the best dunk in UC history. When people speak of James, they talk about dunking from the free throw line through his legs; When people speak of Mel, the talk about Alaska and a dunk with fractions of a second left on the clock. I was privileged to see both of these bearcats when I was in school.

and that great dunk off the missed shot, OMG!!!!!!!!

I remember Bobby Brannen was in the way, and Mel hanging there after an incredible leap and dunk. They played that on the pregame highlight film forever. Do they still do a pregame video?

Mel's dunk in the Duke game was a great play, but not a great dunk.

James White can do things no one else can. How about just a 2 hander from the FT line, not even between the legs. I've never seen anyone else do that. I love Mel, he was an unbelievable jumper and dunker, and certainly a better in game, in traffic dunker, but James White is on another level.

Agreed, but that wasn't the point of my post. My point was that Mel had better in game dunks, and they were more memorable. The first dunk of James' that I think of was (I think) against Xavier, and he did a little shoulder shimmy afterwards. UC went on to lose that game. James was the better technical dunker, but they were not as memorable.

The only time I really remember White dunking on someone was when we played Louisville in '04-'05 (I think). We were up double digits and ended up losing. He crammed on someone right down the lane. I think basically all of his other dunks were breakaways.

Yep, it was on Taquan Dean. That was the only time I remember him dunking with anyone near the basket.

Mel's got some videos on youtube from City Slam Chicago. I like Mel better in games, but White in a contest--although they're still very close.

With jumpers like White and Levitt,
and bangors like Fortson and Max., how I miss the days.....

UC will probably never have the same "freakshow" talent. But that doesnt mean an N.C. cant be won.

Can't forget Hick's either, one of my fave bearcats of all time... As for the talent, I can definitely see Mick recruiting the same type of guys that Huggs went after. I don't think this is the end for jumpers and bangers.
wilks is a jumper.. just not at the white level..
I wonder if Michael Wilson from Memphis back in the day could do this? I know he dunked on a 12 ft rim....an played with the Trotters last I checked.

I went to the Basketball HofF last year and they have a display set up about the 12 foot dunk. They have a basket set up at 12 feet. Looking at it in real life is even more impressive. That is a very long way up.

Wilks might have an inch on White but his vert is still atleast 4 inches lower than White's. White has been said to have over a 50 inch vert but it's probably more like 45-47 inches so Wilks has a little ways to go. However, with training Wilks could very well have White's vert however 40 inches is plenty for a 6'8 wingman, I'd rather have him work on his all-around game. Wilks may not be on James White's level, but the truth is, no one that plays organized bball is...

How do they measure vertical jumps? I thought they only allowed one step and a jump off of two feet. It seemed like White could only jump well with a running start off of one foot. People like Levitt could do one step, jump off of both feet and get up.
I know in the city slam competion Levitt cleared 52 inches but that was with a running start..I think I saw a guy on that competition clear 58 inches...
