Pronounces Akron as the elite team in the MAC. What is up with this guy???

I can't quibble. We have a very tough first run through the East. Until we win on the road, it's just all talk. Akron and OU, on the other hand have the much easier first half and the two tough road games the second half. If we can come out of this half 4-1, we are in perfect shape. If we are 3-2, to OU or Akron's 4-1, we are basically even. Two games back and we are in a hole.
I still think we can win both this week. I like the way we matchup vs. both teams.
Strange, because Elton has attended most all of our home games. That hasn't been true in the past. Wonder about his attendance at the Zips' games!!
hes right Akron is pretty darn good. kinda a coin toss between who the best team is until they all play eachother. I like our chances though. I think for anyone to beat us we would have to give them some help by not playing our game.
My guess is that he is basing this on crAkron's 15 pt. drubbing of Miami and each team's showing against common opponent Buffalo. crAkron won on the road, while Kent struggled through the game at home. In addition, crAkron did beat YSU by 20 and take Dayton to two overtimes in Dayton before falling 83-81. If the Flashes can win both @Miami and @Ohio, the tables may turn. But really, who cares? It's way too early to worry about this. On the bright side, this puts the bullseye on crAkron!
As good KSU fans, let's be rational. I have blasted Elton as much as anyone, but his analysis as an objective writer is correct. We probably are better than Akron, but we have to prove it. As much as I hate the zips, I wished they did not have Dambrot. He is a real challenge for us and will continue to be so in the future. I suggest that the MACC be packed with our fans, not theirs.
Akron beat Kent three times last year. As far as I'm concerned they're the better team until Kent proves otherwise. That's only (gasp) fair.
I am as big an Elton basher as anyone but I am scared he might be right about this one. I think a lot of people assume Akron is bad because of their soft schedule but the two don't always go together. Take a look at the last 2 rounds of BCS bowl games. In 2007 Boise St.= soft schedule but played with Oklahoma and beat them. In 2008 Hawaii = soft schedule and pushed all over the field by Georgia. Teams that play weak schedules are not necessarily weak they are just unknown quantities. Akron gave Dayton all they could handle on the road we did not do the same against Xavier. That worries me. Also we are beginning to look like a team that lives and dies by how we are shooting 3 pointers. You know what teams like that are like. Pull an upset one day look play the Little Sisters of the Poor the next day. I don't think the difference between the two teams is great but it would not suprise me to say at the end of the season that Akron was just a little better and more consistent. The next 3 or 4 games will tell the story.

Last year has absolutely nothing to do with this season. These are different teams. The guy who looks all world agaist us seems to be Middleton but they are not the same team without Travis and Joyce. We are different also With Al (heart-attack) Fisher and the new Q! Should be great games though. The atmosphere at the Mac Center for the final game of the regular season last year was as good as it gets in college B-Ball! I am looking forward to next week.02-13-banana
Most of the players on Akron and Kent are the same, so to suggest that last year has "absolutely nothing" to do with this season is absurd. Do you think the players or coaches feel that way? Not likely.

Completely disagree. Both teams only lost 2 players of signficance. The fact that they beat us 3 times is absolutely relevant. With Middleton and Dials they have the more consisent backcourt and Wood dominated us last year so until we can find a way to beat them then they are absolutely the favorite.
Might as well save all the talk, and wait for Weds night.
We'll know a lot more then.

Let's pack the MAC, and make sure we outnumber the
Zip fans !!
My thoughts on Elton:

(1) He's right. At this point, Akron seems to be "the team to beat". That could change, and change again, several times, though.

(2) I'm happy he has annointed Akron. I always feel a certain uneasiness when he is too favorable to Kent. While I do not believe in such nonsense, Elton does seem to plant "the kiss of death" on the lips of whomever is his team of the week. As far as I'm concerned, he can always be critical of Kent.

(3) There is no inconsistency. Previously, he named Kent as the team with the best chance at an at-large berth (myself, I think the MAC is a one-bid league). Akron, this year, has absolutely no chance at an at-large bid.

(4) His naming Akron as the top team can only serve to give the rest of the league, especially Kent, more insentive. Of course, I don't think a quality program like Kent needs to go looking for insentives, anyway.

(5) In basketball, everything is decided on the court. That is why they play all the games. Barring major injuries, whomever comes out on top deserves to be on top. Kent, and all the rest of the league, has the opportunity to get it done where it counts - on the court.
