What a disaster. Does anybody know what happened to Verhoff and Scull. They haven't played for the last two or three games and now I noticed they are no longer on the roster. Did they leave school or maybe they were asked to leave. Another example of not very good recruiting. Neither contributed much and now they are gone. I think this once proud program has officially fallen apart. They will have at least 6 scholarships next year and all the recruits could contribute immediately if they are any good. If they fail to get 1 or 2 top recruits it's over. A change will need to be made.
I'm not sure if this is your answer to the two missing players or not, but I know two KSU b-ball girls got arrested and suspended indefinitely for use of a stolen debit card sometime mid-semester.
The debit card theft happened prior to the start of the season. Those players, last I heard, were being "redshirted" this season. So with the "departures" of Verhoff and Scull, Kent now has seven (?) available players. Time for a new coach perhaps.
Sure would be nice to have one with a personality. 05-stirthepot
The women's team has simply removed some cancerous matter. There will be a small recovery period and they will be up and winning again in no time. With any cancer situation the toll on the body will leave scars, but the patient will be fine.

As far as the program goes, it is still proud, some of the so called fans, maybe not so much.

Always wear sun block....The Dr.
Doctor, I think I have missed 3 or 4 womens games since 1988 so I'm as good a fan as there is. Are you telling me Scull and Verhoff were kicked off the team. Watching Scull play there was never a doubt in my mind she really didn't care very much. She rarely played at full speed. Verhoff rarely played so who knows. I have been concerned about this staff ever since Buelow walked off the team during a late season game. That season the team was 25-5, beat no. 23 Virginia and Buelow was the number 6 player on the team (25-30 minutes a game). Always thought that was strange but wrote it off as a player with a bad attitude. But than there was Fakes, Kryzowski, Zona, Rubis, the credit card twins,Scull, Verhoff and I am sure I forgot a few. Combine that with the coaching staff's inability to recruit and keep a roster of more than 10-11 players seems to indicate to me it's not all the players. After Zerman left they kept us interested for two years by using a few mirrors(I still don't know how they won a MAC championship with Zona at point guard). But they really have not been very good since 2002. Last year they would have been as bad as this year if Peoples wouldn't have fallen from heaven. Having said all this I'm impressed I got 7 replys to a womens team thread. Not bad.
Burden,
I have seen your posts and know you are a big fan of the program (we need more of us), as am I. I also notice that quite often you are misinformed.

From the Media guides in my office reception room and the ramblings of insiders while under medical sedation this is what I can tell you.

First Kristin Buelow was never a 6th player. She played sparingly and had no desire or talent to play Div. I basketball so she left after one season.

Verhoff never wanted to play anything in college, I've seen it a hundred times. She was driven by family and community expectations, tried volleyball in Florida one year, then sat here a year where she did everything possible to avoid having to practice. Finally just quit.

Scull was lazy and refused to work at any aspect of her game. She gained 35 pounds over the summer while sitting on her assests. She was staying on the team after year one to have her school paid for. When she was told her parents would pay for her final year she quit.

Emily Fakes left to be closer to home and her boyfriend, simple as that.

Krezeczowski was also allergic to work and after an idle summer was worse as a sophomore than as a freshman. She transferred to a kinder gentler Akron program where at the time there were no expectations and nobody ever pushed you to reach your potential, so she never did.

Rubis was a player who didn't want to enter the real world, she enjoyed the social aspects of college life and looked at her fifth year as a chance to have a free ride, paid for, with few classes and lots of free time. All she had to do was stay on the team and that's all she did. No effort, no leadership, no desire. Hangout, have fun. When confronted with this, she combined with Zona to be a negative influence on what should have been a very good team.

Zona's biggest problem was her dad. Big Red Flag, transferred high schools when things didn't go her way. Transferred colleges when things didn't go her way. Got here with no transfers left and when things didn't go her way, daddy tried to make trouble(Readers Digest Version). Think about this.......every potential recruit brought in who spent time with these two were sold a negative bill of goods, thus a hole in your recruiting classes, it's pretty simple with girls, team chemistry is everything.

Recently, look at it this way. I have people who have impressive resumes' and pass an interview with flying colors. So I hire them, then they steal, are late for work, refuse to learn, refuse to work and cause disharmony among co-workers, so what do I do. Of course I get rid of them. Maybe I should have seen it coming, but often you never do, it just happens. No different than what has happened with the two players who ran afoul of the law. They're probably pretty good kids who made a big mistake. It would have been impossible to see that coming.

My understanding is that coach Lindsay is pretty demanding and today's athlete's, especially female ones struggle with that. Many come from programs where they were coddled and everything was fun. In college, fun is winning, and winning doesn't come without hard work, some tears, and a whole bunch of sweat. The good ones thrive and those unwilling to work fall by the wayside. Unfortunately our society is creating more of those that are unwilling to work, it's sad but true.

I am not a coach, but I am a huge fan of women's athletics and especially the Kent State Women's programs. Right now, across the board they have one of the best coaching staffs in women's athletics anywhere in the nation at any level, their accomplishments speak for themselves.

I realize this years team is going to be a tough "pill" to swallow, but they seem to be working hard and they seem to enjoy playing together. In the meantime, bring some Tylenol to the games, preferrably 500MG you will probably need them. Let's give em our best support and hope the coaches can turn things around with a good recruiting class. Keep up your support Burden.

Holy Crap, gotta scrub.....later.
KSU Women 74-68 win in OT over Preseason East Pick Ohio at Athens.

Sounded like the women did quite well, maybe coach Lindsay is pretty smart after all or maybe the radiation therapy has gotten rid of the cancer.
That's a very nice win.
I think the good doctor explained the situation exactly the way it is (and was).

Everything he said is the way its been explained to me from several different sources.
Doctor- I believe the coaching staff was trying to treat the cancer with an old drug, called "Fagouwi" (pronounced Fa-GOW-ee) but, it appears that going cold turkey was the best cure. Thanks for the insight and good luck, we're all counting on you.
I am not really up on these new medical terms, but the good Doc has just become one of my fav fives. What an enlightening post. 04-cheers Here's to you Doc, you know best.
Good Doctor I must have not expressed my self well. Everything in your post is accurate and I knew all of that (except for Scull and Vehoff who I originally asked about as I said above it was obvious Scull was lazy almost from day 1). My point was why does this happen so often to this team. It's very difficult to play with 7/8 players every year. Maybe I'm all wet but eventually you have to blame the generals and not the privates. Maybe they just recruit poorly but something doesn't seem right. In every case I see why they have to do it I would just like to know why it happens so often.

Also unfortunately the statistics on the web site only go back to one year after Buelow left but if you search the internet for Buelow/Kent State you find many box scores showing her playing 20 minutes/game and being called the defense stopper on the team. She was assigned to guard Kim Knuth the nations highest scorer that year for instance. The line-up that year was Zerman, Nance, Bader as starting guards with Buelow being the first wing player off the bench. The only other back-up was Lisa Wube who played very little. Buelow actually quit near the end of her sophmore season after playing about 20 games.

But having said that I was excited about the win last night and I do believe they have a nice nucleus. They just need to add the right players next year, keep them around and prove me wrong.
Burden,

We're in the same hospital.......different floor. I'll buy you lunch in the cafeteria sometime, Thursday's is meat loaf.

Go Flashes!
Let's see if the women can make it two straight Saturday. I would like to make it up Wednesday as I know one of BG's bench players, but it is still up in the air. I have always enjoyed watching Lindsay coach.

However, I can agree with Burden on a few points. The women's team since the early part of this decade have had more than a few defections. Dr. K provides a good synopsis on most, but it is still a red flag. Certainly, it wouldn't be dismissed as kids just don't want to do the work if it happened in the men's program. Remember the outcry about the men after the 2004-05 season?

The last two years they have had I believe a total of 7 or 8 four-year seniors go through the program, which is a great number, but on the developmental side, only three of which I think you can make a case for really substantially improving (Shearer, Stewart and James). Vavrek had great potential, and LaFleur had good moments but she was such a project her usefulness at the DI level was always going to be limited. I saw Griffith play a few times in high school, and she never got an ounce better offensively at the college level.

That said, I do hope Lindsay leaves on his own terms because the program continues to have winning seasons. While I don't know if Kennedy would fire him, I don't want to see this become a 10-win team over a span of a few years. Hopefully this OU win was a sign that this team is just extremely inexperienced rather than just being awful as previous results suggest.

BTW, what happened to Humes? Has that been discussed? Is she injured, ineligible?
Humes was one of the players charged (don't know if she was convicted) with debit card fraud. She has been redshirted and I believe she was on the bench in street clothes against Miami today. I assume that means that she has a chance to return next year. Miami played a tough 2-3 zone with two very good defensive bigs causing all kinds of trouble. Except when they were off the floor in foul trouble we just couldn't get any offense going. Thirty turnovers many of them trying to get the ball inside. Today was the first time Gibson looked confused and tired. I am less sure she is the answer after today but freshman can have games like that so I have to be patient. Ellie Shields had a terrible game also. Another freshman. Also a center like Kowalska playing 35+ a game is beginning to show. Just hope the team doesn't lose too much confidence. I do believe there is a good core for next year.

As far as Lindsey is concerned I just think the 8th through 11th players on his team just begin to think it's not worth it. He also can't adapt to players personalities. Something tells me that Christian doesn't treat Q and Mike Scott exactly the same. Lindsey is not capable of that I believe.

Oh well that's just my opinion.
I noticed something on the bench today. It was Bob. Almost showing no emotion. He was in a jumpsui, instead of his suit/tie that he used to be. He harldy ever called plays. Just leaned on the table with his arms crossed. When a timeout came, he almost seemed to pull himself off the bench. I didn't see him coaching whatsoever.
Lindsey slipped on ice over the holidays and ripped his knee up(it's hell getting old). That explains the clothing and the difficulty getting up. I don't know about the play calling I didn't notice.

He did do some coaching as he called 2 timeouts in the last minute or so to give his team some experience pressing. He sure chewed some players out during the game. I've heard some people say the coaching staff is losing interest after 17 years or so but I'm not ready to say that yet. They still seem to be able to coach and improve a team over the course of a season. It's the recruiting and player desertion that is worrying me.
Burden,
Just hit me what floor of the hospital you are on, because only somebody in the Psyche Ward would blame a coach for blowing out an athletes ACL....wow, are you serious....look left and right..are the walls really, really soft?

Just guessing but is this the fourth game you've seen this year?

Gibson has been confused all season....hello ....she's a freshman...there's an optometrist in my building, swing by I can get you a discount. Gibson and Shields will both have a serious chance of being on the MAC all freshman team. Kowalska will be first or second team all MAC and Chanel Harris is a very solid freshman who will be an ouststanding player in the very near future. Brinkman will be a great role player much like Griffith(who by the way played in a horrible HS conference). Brinkman struggles to be in the right place at the right time but makes up for it in hustle. New recruits....Kowalska 20/14(7th DBL/DBL)...Harris 8/6......Gibson, who struggled, still had 10 pts. 9asst.(7 to's) in 39 minutes. Shields had early foul trouble but still managed 4/7, with a strong finish she also could make a run at Freshman All-MAC. Pretty sure she got Coach Crawley's vote.

But you're right these coaches can't recruit and if you think they're going through the motions..ask Silvia Crawley how she got her behind outcoached at home.

So.....they lost to Miami.. who returned 10 letterwinners and the nation's third leading scorer...and had no freshman playing significant minutes. Chances are they will lose again.

As for Lindsay not understanding women's basketball or it's players.......mmmmm....can't even address the ignorance of that statement.

Speaking of ignorance....Alpha Flash...pull up your pants..yours is showing..better yet, just delete your whole post before anyone sees it, quick. Seriously don't you feel silly now that you know?

Mandatory random drug testing for all poster's begins next week. The Dr. will be supervising.
Wow, I love how people here post their opinions as fact, then call out other posters as ignornat. What a jerk...
