Full Version: On meeting JKill tonite

Jerry Kill was the sole attraction at Fatty's tonite.

After taping he devoted time to mingling with the crowd. I simply welcomed him, introduced myself and wished him much success and departed. Many fans consumed alot of his time.

I can clearly understand why Novak is so comfortable with him as his successor.

Jerry K is personable, down-to-earth, focused, humorous and both driven yet humble giving credit to players, assistants and others for his success.

Six attendees each asked a Q. , the last being most direct and well conceived.

First, the questioner praised Jerry and SIU QB for the leadership they demonstrated in closing the game against NIU last fall. Without a player like Hill, SIU's win would have been much less likely.

Next he asked if he will be seeking a QB to fill any of the remaining recruiting schollies .

Kill properly replied that he needs to meet & evaluate NIU's QBs currently on roster before making any such determination.

He also emphasized that while he did have a few transfers , especially players with personal connections to him or assistants, transfers were NOT a big segment of the recruiting practices when at SIU.

I saw NO such behavior or commentary or expressions by Kill which have been posed here prematurely re: how he might be received negatively by parents outside of the south.

I like the new coach - alot for his personality. We will all await how he performs on recuiting trail and organizing practices, game planning, making adjustments, press conferences/media scrutiny in Chgo and fitting current players into best situations, systems, schemes and mismatches to maximize their role & contributions on the field.

I was curious re: three young fans in attendance wearing SIU T shirts & caps.
Was the point to honor Kill for his achievements , make him feel welcomed and comfortable or to suggest SIU fans are behind Kill while he's no longer the Saluki coach, or what?
Identify yourselves, please.

If they were from Chgoland or Carbondale they are an even sicker Saluki cult than are Huskie hard cores.

RED RIOT got a mention by Brad Hoey on camera.

_____________

PJ was in attendance and appeared happy and self confident.
Thanks for the post for those of us stuck out of town Monday - Friday. Quite insightful and in direct oppostion to some naysayers earlier on the board. Face to face interactions are usually good indicators. I think I remember "once you can fake sincerity, you have it made".
Kill looks and sounds alot like Novak's long lost & missing younger 2nd cousin .
With the basketball hire, I was optimistic we got the right guy but not completely convinced. Time will tell if Patton was the right guy. But I get an even better feeling initially with the Kill hire. Im very confident this was the right selection.
I was one of the three wearing SIU stuff. My point was to honor him for the success that he has brought to our program and to wish him good luck on his new task at hand as coach of NIU.

He's a great man. I'm glad those of you that made it out to IHS saw this for yourselves.

Completely agreed. I was not sure at first, but I am convinced we made the right choice for our football program. On the flip side, I have yet to feel good about the basketball hire. I'm not saying it won't be great, and he deserves a chance to prove that, but I was not comfortable the day he brought in , and I am not comfortable now.

We can't judge Patton on anything that happens this year.

Yet, I like what I am already seeing (despite our record). Patton has them playing unselfishly as a team. Even though they are losing, they work hard, are fun to watch, and are improving with each game. Also, it looks like Patton is bringing in some good recruits.

P.S. Don't tell anyone, but I think I'm getting a man-crush on Sundance Wicks. 04-jawdrop He looks like a tall, skinny version of Drew Carey.

So basically he doesn't have to do ANYTHING on the field or with recruiting to convince you he is the right choice?

I'm actually impressed with what he has done in recruiting already...Granted it is just on paper, but we could have a new starting five next year: From a previous thread:

1 - Jerwin Calloway

2 - 6-5 Dominique Johnson

5 - 6-11 Sean Kowal

4 - 6-7 Tyler Storm

Also, Bryan Hall, Mike Dinunno

I don't know if these guys will pan out...but I sure like what I have seen so far on Patton's ability to recurit...couple these new players with the promising freshmen guards already on the team and I really think NIU could compete for a MAC title as early as next year.
Is this the Kill or Patton thread?

Yeah, pretty funny how by Post #4 we were already OT.

Yeah i agree with Patton. I was talking about Kill.
In my opinion Landers will continue to be in the starting line up next year regardless who we add unless O.J. Mayo or someone of that ilk has decided to play at NIU. The guy is the most exciting player I've seen here in a long time.
As long as he doesn't have to bring the ball up the court; he's great on defense and a playmaker in transition. His ball handling needs work, but he's not a PG and he's only a freshman.

It's a modified spread, but he has stated that he will adjust his O to his players. I think we have the horses to run that type of O.
