There was much more to Joni Herschede than her wealth and generosity.
Mrs. Herschede, who died Saturday at 67, gave millions of dollars to educational and sports funds, particularly at the University of Cincinnati, her late husband's alma mater.
She grew prominent running Herschede Jewelers on Fourth Street from the mid-1970s until it closed in 1995 after 118 years in business. She devoted time, energy and money to causes including the ballet, the zoo and children's clubs.
She had an eloquent and striking public persona. She drove a red Mazda Miata bearing UC logos, often wore UC's red and black colors and was known for her hundreds of stylish hats....(break)
In Tampa on Nov. 3, watching the Bearcats' victory over South Florida, Mrs. Herschede felt disoriented briefly. Doctors determined she had suffered a minor stroke...(break)
Friends may call from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday at Gwen Mooney Funeral Home, 4389 Spring Grove Ave. Mass of Christian burial is set for 10 a.m. Dec. 10 at St. Peter in Chains Cathedral, Eighth and Plum streets. Burial is in Spring Grove Cemetery. Contributions may be made to Ronald McDonald House, 350 Erkenbrecher Ave., Cincinnati, OH 45229."
Joni was a true friend to UC Athletics and in particular basketball. She was also a strong advocate for UC Athletics as a member of the UC BOT, and in my opinion it was no coincidence the Huggins thing happened shortly after her term expired and a new member was added to replace her.
I had occasion to meet with her several times and she was a lady with grace, intelligence and great spirit.
