At the soccer fields pace, the softball stadium should be ready to go by 2014.

For hilarity, I would like Pitt to dissect this paragraph from the article above.

“When you have great leaders like Dave (Mullins) and Barbie (Breedlove) it shows as we have strong student-athletes and support here at ETSU,” said university president Dr. Paul E. Stanton, Jr. “We are coming off our best athletic season, and now we continuing to grow as a university with the building of this major athletic complex.”
I am all for the building of new athletic facilities as they are badly needed. I have to wonder if they are ever going to finish the soccer stadium or just let it set there half done. Also, does anyone know exactly where the softball stadium is going to be? The article said behind the Kroger shopping center. I did not know there was land owned by the state there.
The only thing major about this complex is the amount of money that's going to be wasted on building it.
Yeah its right behind the shopping center...across the street from where Mooney Field used to be.
To me, this epitomizes poor leadership. My wife used to go to a church that raised money for a building, and started adding to it before the first phase was even paid for. The church ended up in financial trouble for years afterwards.

ETSU doesn't even have the money to finish one thing, yet they begin another. This has indeed become an "athletic department of rederings." And did you notice basketball - the one thing fans actually want - was still at the bottom of the list? I'd love to see an audit of where this money is coming from. My guess is they're taking Pirate Club (or BSASA or whatever it's called) money (formerly used for scholarships) and using it for facilities, while funneling all their new found student fee revenue to support scholarships. $4.9 million for a softball stadium, and supposedly $8 million for a soccer complex (which is "completed") - if they had raised $12.9 million, or even $1 million, there'd be some big smiling faces and big checks pasted on the front page of the Johnson City Press, but I have yet to see one. Doubt it? Remember when they raised the $2 million for the golf center? It was a huge deal for them, all over the media. Folks, we need to see an audit and find out what's going on, 'cause things don't add up.
Fan1- It shows that Paul Stanton is a buffoon.
Remember, Mullins said the field construction would begin in April.

Now here's the fun part. One of the things East Tennisee State will tell you why the soccer stadium was so late was because there was a delay in getting the materials there and the fire marshall was being nebby.

Now- here's the dirty little secret about that.

If the building contractor you get to build a soccer field has these delays and therefore can't build the venue on time, do you-

A- Look for the next least expensive contractor to build the next facility?

B- Keep going with them because they are cheap?

I'll let you guess what East Tennisee State did.

The fire marshall thing is so unbelievably unflattering on Mullins that I honestly don't want to print it here- I want to wait for a mainstream media article.

But I will PM it to you if you'd like.
Sorry, I am still trying to see in my mind where the softball field is to go. Is it across Greenwood drive from where Mooney Field used to be? This would be behind the White's supermarket not the Krogers? Am I wrong here? In any event I would love the see the new football stadium(yes football stadium!) built somewhere around the parking lot behind Bucks' Pizza. This would make it close enough to the new(hopefully) basketball arena where the two could share a parking facility. That would make way too much sense though.
Wow...

Isn't Barbie the dyke?
Barbie used to work at App. State. Chancellor Peacock and the students over there love us for taking her off their hands. I think there's an 80's song written about her.
BTW, where are the locker rooms/shower facilities going to built for this softball stadium? Where's the batting cage going to be placed? Better yet, where are the tens of fans that will watch ETSU softball going TO PARK THEIR CARS?

I know people are upset that these minor sports are getting new facilities before basketball...but do we really want this bunch in charge of building a new basketball arena to last us for the next twenty plus years? I for one have no faith in them to build a place that is worthy of replacing the dome.
That is a point. Or hiring a new basketball coach, or a football coach....
Very true.

My thoughts are that a new arena could and should be built. But I agree with you.

One thought should also be that if ETSU did build a new arena- they could rent it out to an indoor football team which would effectively take the place of the gridiron Bucs and they University could make money off it.

But they ain't that bright.

We used to have a person on here named MommaBear who told us that ETSU used to intentionally make facilities so that they could not be used for anything but practices and such.

A good example was some basketball courts that were actually intentionally made about a foot short so they wouldn't be eligible to be used for tournament play- like AAUs that might need to play two games at once- like a track and field event.

The thing is- I believe city leaders are as much to blame for this as anyone.

Freedom Hall is obsolete. I know Pete Paduch just wanted to sell it, but who would want to buy it? They even looked into ETSU moving there, but it was to cost $21 million just to get it up to NCAA standards- and that was 10 years ago.

Point is- a new arena shouldn't just be an ETSU thing. It should be a JOHNSON CITY THING so the area can attract things like pro hockey, concerts, and possibly indoor football along with ETSU hoops.

Where our Civic Leaders to promote this idea for the good of the community?

Oh. Yeah. I forgot. They are giving $2.5 million to Austin Peay.
THE CPA pool was a huge example of that. Incredibly stupid. I mean I'm glad they aren't entrusted with building a new arena, because quite frankly no matter how hard the four employees and two G.A.'s they have that are worth anything work, they're not getting the near 50 million to build a basketball arena.
By the way, you want another positive sign for this?

Correct me if I'm wrong- but there was no media there.

I know they tried to get media for the event, but most laughed them off.
That's because they didn't have food. Put some Little Caesar's and a few Pepsi's out...
You may be right.

But if that's the case, why all the coverage of high school basketball?
That said- the point here is this.

The http://www.etsubucs.com story even mentioned no media showed up. Furthermore, when they quoted someone, they quoted a senior player who would never play there talking about how this was a reward for all her hard work.

How? So she can have a nice seat as a spectator?

This program cannot help but shoot themselves in the foot! It's laughable!

But this would have been a great time for a member of the media to ask them some hard questions- going from the delay of the soccer stadium to why this groundbreaking occurred right before winter and not in April as originally stated by Mullins.

When is the stadium scheduled to be completed? What is the time table for the baseball stadium to be built? Do you have the money to begin? Why use the same contractor that couldn't get the materials in on time for the soccer stadium to build this venue?

Let alone all the other things about ETSU athletics.

Of course, had they been asked these questions- it's likely the reporter would have gotten called into the office by his editor and said

"We got a call from ETSU. They say they don't want you covering them anymore. Something about picking your feet in Poughkipsee and they don't think you have good hygene."

Now, why the media won't stand up to these people so they can DO THEIR JOB- I don't know.
