"The Big East could then split into a North-South divisional format with Connecticut, Massachusetts, Rutgers, Syracuse, Temple and Villanova compiling the North Division, and Cincinnati, Georgetown, Louisville, Pittsburgh, South Florida and West Virginia making up the South Division."

Probably not.

No way. Georgetown, Umass, and villanova wont be 1a in football anytime soon and Temple couldnt fill a high school stadium.

A 12 team league would have to include Memphis and ECU, then we'd have to really scrape the bottom of the barrel and choose someone like central florida or southern miss to fill out the last spots. Not a good plan because it would delute our league with bad teams.

In a perfect world, Penn State, Notre Dame, Memphis, and Maryland all join and make the 12 team league. Now THAT would be a good conference in basketball and football. Anything else just makes us worse imo.
Nice article, not likely to happen though Villanova and G town could play football at this level if they wanted to.
that article is a total waste of good ink.
I see the C-USA fans are running over to try and shoot it down! 03-lmfao The Big East is going to split eventually though.

Concerning Georgetown: I really don't think so.

Let's say they play at RFK for home games... The stadium would be empty. I just don't see how Georgetown could put together 30,000 fans in the seats.

It may not be impossible. Maybe Georgetown could schedule Notre Dame, Navy, Army, UVA, East Carolina, NCSU, UNC, Penn State, West Virginia, Virginia Tech, and Maryland. I just don't see it happening.

Spot on! 04-cheers
Georgetown would never move up to 1-A. Same with Nova. UMass ehh. Temple is on the upswing again I think and attendance was much improved this year even without the Penn State game, they and UCF are likely our targets in the future.
brista21, how do you see the Big East membership in 2010?

Agreed. Georgetown has been asked by the Big East to move up I believe and they had the same concerns that chess mentioned.
It would be a sound Big East, if Notre Dame, Georgetown and Villanova would step up to the plate for Big East football.04-cheers
Wilkie I think in 2010 we might look exactly as we do now. In 2013 we end up splitting with UCF and Temple coming on board as the 9th and 10th members.
I think we split and add two of UCF, Memphis and ECU. I could see Temple, if they get their house in order. I believe the split could happen as early as 2010. And again Notre Dame or Villanova could fool us and step to the plate and the split would be avoided. 04-cheers
If the BE BB schools are not willing to extend the clean split agreed to in 2010, they splitt in 2010. If there willing to extend agreement, BE could add FB only for the time being.
Right now the BE can afford to be patient untill new TV contracts are up in 2013. Also everybody who might be on expansion list are improving. UCF, Memphis & EC are rising to the top of C-USA, UAB getting new dome. Hous & Tulene can not be rulled out yet. Temple & Buffalo are also improving & toledo can not be rulled out. UMASS is looking to move up. That 10 canidates & BE can afford to be patient & wait for the canidates to sort themselves out.
I believe that is what is happening now.
Why are we supposed to care about what some hack in East Bumfark, Texas thinks? 01-wingedeagle

Georgetown has not been asked to join; on the contrary, Tranghese has been quoted in the past as that he wouldn't consider it.

Agreed. UConn and Nova were the ones asked. One did, the other didn't.

The one thing the football side of the house doesn't need are two more teams with small alumni bases and programs that need to be developed.

If the league wants better bowls it needs established programs and barring that, programs that have solid fanbases and which, with BCS status, can develop quickly.

Still would love to have Georgetown and Villanova as part of the league with a guarantee of lifetime membership. Both bring so much to the table. But I doubt either would be interested if a split occurs.

Cheers,
Neil

The Tranghese quotes were not about 1997 but about an invite going forward--he dismissed Georgetown out of hand and that didn't show much respect for a member institution.

I don't think the question is whether the schools are interested--if the commissioner wants no part of Georgetown, what's the point in elevating the discussions going forward?

Which teams are they? 04-cheers
