Grobe Tapped To Lead Razorbacks

The Morning News
FAYETTEVILLE — Wake Forest coach Jim Grobe is going to be the next football coach at the University of Arkansas and is likely to be introduced today.

The board of the Razorback Foundation met briefly via conference call Wednesday evening and approved a salary supplement for Grobe, 55, who just completed his seventh season at Wake Forest University.

The board of trustees members were polled and the majority backed Grobe’s hire.

The contract is apparently around $2.2 million per year for five years.

A coach’s salary from state funds is limited, so the foundation must agree to guarantee any other money that is promised a coach.

For instance, former coach Houston Nutt received a state salary of $330,000, but his total package was about $1.5 million. Among other things, Nutt was guaranteed $600,000 for radio-TV and $250,000 for speaking engagements.

The foundation would not be asked to approve a specific compensation package unless Grobe had agreed to the deal. The process was evident on Monday night, when the board was supposed to meet to approve money for Clemson coach Tommy Bowden.

The meeting was postponed twice and then canceled when Bowden agreed to a contract extension at Clemson.

At one point, it appeared the foundation would bump Bowden’s salary so he could personally take care of a buyout at Clemson. The same process could be in play with Grobe, whose contract reportedly includes a buyout of $2 million.

It is believed incoming Arkansas athletic director Jeff Long zeroed in on Bowden and Grobe as his top two choices in the days after Nutt resigned. People interested in the search were told Long would hire the best coach available.

University Chancellor John White indicated in an e-mail to The Morning News on Wednesday the search to find Nutt’s replacement was close to being finished.

“I am confident (Long) will complete the search within the next few days. As I said to one of the reporters earlier in the week, I fully expect the process to be brought to successful closure before the end of the week,” White wrote in his e-mail.

“Based on my most recent discussions with Jeff, I believe that timeline is feasible.”

Wake Forest assistant athletic director Steve Shutt said Wednesday it was against university policy to say whether Arkansas asked for permission to speak with Grobe.

Grobe has a 45-39 record leading Wake Forest’s Demon Deacons, including an 11-3 Orange Bowl team last year and an 8-4 team this year headed for the Meineke Bowl. Following last season, he signed an extension through 2016 for what was believed to be about $1.1 million per year.

Grobe’s name has come up lately for several coaching vacancies, including both the Michigan and Nebraska jobs. He said Monday he’s happy at Wake Forest, though he’s not opposed to listening to schools interested in him.

Grobe acknowledged this week he’s been approached by several schools over the past two years, but he wouldn’t name any specifically.

His hire ends nearly two weeks of uncertainty, in which Arkansas’ players have seen Nutt leave and hire five of his former assistant coaches to join him in Oxford.

At the same time, defensive coordinator Reggie Herring has taken over as interim head coach while names such as Auburn’s Tommy Tuberville have been rumored to be on their way to Fayetteville.

“We’ve all just been curious about who the next coach would be. We heard about Tuberville and Bowden, but those guys made decisions to stay at their schools,” Arkansas strong safety Matt Hewitt following Wednesday’s practice.

“Everybody’s biting their fingernails right now to see who’s going to be the next head coach here.”
Grobe is staying at Wake.....

Grobe staying at Wake
Arkansas has to be one of the toughest BCS football job. It's a coach killing job. Grobe obviously came to his senses and realized what a huge mistake he was on the verge of making. Better jobs will come his way if he wants to leave Wake for a higher profile job.
Man, that's rough for them. First Tuberville, then Bowden, and now Grobe?

Wonder who they go after next.
That's true. I think Houston Nutt is one hell of a coach. He got run out.

Of course Jeff Bower had 14 straight winnign seasons at Southern Miss and got run out... That was outright disgraceful
The university's fundraising arm did confirm the salary supplement for Grobe, but didn't want to announce that Grobe was hired. Seems they are quite gunshy after Dana Altman was hired to be the men's basketball coach, complete with a press conference, then he returned to Creighton the next day.

-- Its a crazy world when a coach thinks Wake Forest and Arkansas are about the same on the coaching chain....The only advantage I can see to wake is that its an easier league to win

Who in their right mind would want to coach at Arkansas? I wouldn't. 01-wingedeagle
I think Arkansas is a fine job. It isn't as good as Florida, LSU or Georgia. However, I think it's a notch below Tennessee, comperable to Auburn, and probably better than South Carolina. It's much better than Vandy, Kentucky, Ole Miss or Mississippi State.

They have a great history. Even though it doesn't produce TONS of talent, there are plenty of good HS football players in the state and Arkansas has historically gotten most everybody they want. Their facilities are some of the best in the country. The program has a very fine history. And there is a TON of money supporting the program. The Tyson and Walton families are HUGE Razorback boosters.

Arkansas has won the SEC West and played in the SEC Championship Game 3 times in the last 13 years.

-- I would much rather coach at Arkansas then Wake. At least the Razerbacks can be counted on to put their cash in football, while bball is king at Wake. Still think this is a curious move by Grobe

Jackson,

Historically, I would compare the Arkansas program with West Virginia's. They are both the "flagship" universities of relatively smaller states, but both have fine tradition. I think the WVU coach has a leg up RIGHT NOW because I think it's easier to win the Big East (and therefore play in a BCS bowl) than the SEC under the current conference setups. What do you think? This isn't a knock on the Big East. It's simply the way the two conferences are right now with 8 vs 12 members.
Arkansas is a better job than West Virginia - definitely.

Have to disagree with you there completely. It would be near impossible for Arkansas to make the BCS in the SEC where they have to compete with cash for players programs like Auburn, Alabama, LSU, FLA, Tenn etc.

His anti-WVU stance makes any input he gives regarding WVU irrelevant and extremely biased. Take it with a grain of salt.

WVU definitely has an easier path to a conference championship year in an year out.
Grobe turns down Arkansas to stay at Wake, Schiano turns down Michigan to stay at Rutgers. What's going on in the world? The latter makes you wonder if we're on bizarro Earth. Who would have ever thought one of Michigan's top choices in a coaching search would be a Rutgers coach who would then end up turning them down to stay at Rutgers. That was completely unfathomable until yesterday.

This is a continuing theme from recent years. Rodriguez and Leavitt have turned down other jobs. Didn't Shiano spurn Miami last year?

-- I agree 100%. I would throw a school like Iowa in that mix as well. Of course, every small state school has always looked to Nebraska on how to do things right. One thing that I know WVU has to do is have a very good walkon program to provide depth etc. That is straight out of the Cornhusker playbook

They may put their money in football, but they have such unrealistic expectations that unless you contend for the SEC and national championship every year you won't last more than 4 years or so. A successful coach can remain at Wake, and make enough money - with the added perks - to be comfortable at Wake until it's time to retire. You'd be put up on a pedestal when you retired too. Arkansas would never give anyone that kind of security and support.

What an idiotic post.
