it was nice to see rocky in the student union with a handful of flyers he was handing out promoting both the mens and womans games this weekend. marketing the basketball team on campus is still a complete joke. when i lived in the dorms 3 years ago they had football posters everywhere and once basketball season started we saw nothing. so it was nice to see some marketing on campus going on
Athletic marketing has a long way to go. Russ Car wash at Laskey and Secor hasa display of Ohio State and Michigan items to dress up your clean car.
The Anderson's features the same. Cracker Barrel in Perrysburg has a large supply of UM and OSU items.
Toledo Hospital gift shop has a nice display of, you guessed it, OSU and Michigan stuff. As you exit exit the third floor elevator, where new babies arrive, there is a display case of Michigan baby items urging you to start them off right. I thought we hired a company to market UT? They can't even do it at TOLEDO HOSPITAL!

What about UT MEdical Center? I complaied at the gift shop about displays of UM- OSU stuff. Their response? "That's what sells." And they are right. But let's start with them at least- that's like selling OSU stuff at the bookstore (and if we do, please don't tell me).

i hear ya. when we were at MCO/UT the only Rocket items i saw were a wall clock, a wristwatch, and a coffee mug. Plenty of other schools though.

We have basketball teams?

How is that working out these days? 03-banghead

I must admit I enjoyed going to games to watch Dana Drew, Jane Roman, etc with those excellent lady rockets teams.

And we had a nice men's team in 2001 or something.

Rocket Sports Properties is not there to force businesses to carry Toledo merchandise. Their job is to court other local and national companies and organizations to sponsor Toledo Athletics.

I must have horrible memory because I seem to remember the men winning the regular season MAC title last year.

OK, then I would hope that someone is encouraging local businesses to carry Toledo merchandise. I don't care whose job it is. It should be part of the Athletic Department's mission to promote the University of Toledo.

Your memory is fine, Dan. And Owen is right- we were pretty good in 2001. Since I remember the end of the Nichols era and the Gibson and Ec..., EEccc.. OK, I can't even say it era, I'm pretty happy. This bunch is going to be fun to watch by the end of the year although I doubt we'll have a starter over 5'8" by then as they get worn to a nub playing huge minutes.

My bad. I didn't realize there was an award for that.

Easy to get discouraged with these oppressive OOC games I guess. Would like to get to a point UT wins some early season games. We were there 6 years ago or more with better OOC wins.

As a whole though, watching the scores on the ticker, MAC is winning a lot of games this early season or making it close. Could be an up year I hope.

Yep. Just like in football...win and you get a banner in Savage/plaque on Larimer.

As a matter of fact, someone from the UT Marketing and Communications department did pound the pavement before this year's football season and had some success. Did anyone notice the big window display of Rocket stuff at MC Sporting Goods on Secor? That was directly because of that effort. I just hope the things sold well so they will do it again.

-Dan
MC Sporting Goods did have a large display of quality merchandise. We purchased several items. I also thanked the manager for supporting UT and he said they were selling very well.
At a recent town hall meeting president Jacobs responded to a question about why the hospital gift shop sells merchandise from other schools, including BG. His response was that people had the right to purchase the types of merchandise that they wanted.

The questioner mentioned that he had never been at an academic medical center that carried another school's merchandise.
Same lame excuse they had for selling OSU and ND crap in the Glass Bowl back in the 90s. Thank goodness they stopped THAT practice. I understand the argument, but really, most people are sheep...they'll buy whatever's popular. If UT stuff is popping up all over the place, that implies it's popular. A sort of self-fulfilling prophecy. The leadership at UT has to have the mindset that their stuff IS valuable before anybody else has that mindset.

I buy so much UT gear it is ridiculous. And I do see an awful lot of "Toledo" merchandise being worn around the city. I just wish as a whole there was more local pride and support for UT athletics.
If the city supported UT in force we would be in a major conference. I am always afraid that ship has sailed.
At the University of Michigan Medical Center, the staff wears a Block M on their "uniforms" (whatever they're called). There is a sense of pride and you don't see anything from other schools.
The Toledo Mud Hens are practically geniouses when it comes to marketing and self-promotion and even THEY have other teams merchandise on sale in the "Swamp Shop." I agree that UTMC should only sell UT stuff, but at the same time if somebody buys a ND hat or Michigan sweatshirt at a UT facility or game site, the profit goes back to UT - and that ultimately supports UT. (Moral of the story, I'm torn on the issue...but we need to find a way to make it cool to wear UT hats, shirts, etc. then we'll see more in the stores)

Don't do it Kevin, you'll be giving me the $600 very soon. I should have a good chance over winter break with all the students being at home.
