Walter Sharpe won co conference usa player of the week with Houston's Rob McKiver. I'm surprised no one has mentioned this yet (at least as far as I've browsed).
Imagine how good he could be if he put in a little effort.
Way to go Walt !!02-13-banana
Well done Walt! That's great news.

I really did not see a player saturday not giving effort. I saw a player that is adjusting to playing with his back to the basket, a player adjusting to players that are bigger and stronger, and a player who after a two year lay-off is getting his game legs back.

I would wait a little while before, starting to question his effort. Then again many people on this board question whether we would ever see him on the court.
I think the truth is in the middle.
Some people watch Walt and describe his style of play as "lazy." Others could see the same thing and see a player who moves "effortlessly." Walt is a graceful player and sometimes that style player can get an unfair rap.

I think there are times Walt could be accused of the former when it's really the latter.
OTOH, there are definitely times he does not hard enough, mostly on the defensive end. For all of his basketball life Walt has been able to coast because he has been more skilled than his competition. He has to learn, IMO, what playing hard REALLY means. Don't forget that Walt has still played only about 20 college games.
Mario had the same problem, man oh man did we miss him when he was gone.
Can someone tell me if Walt can shoot from outside? He looks like he has a nice shot with a high, fluid release. Has he made a 3 pointer this season? If so, I haven't seen it. If he were to hit a couple of 3's a game, he would be unstoppable.

Yes, he can shoot the three. Facing the basket, covered by one guy he is pretty much unstoppable.

When he does have the ball at the three point line, facing the basket, his guy does not drop off him and Walter is quick enough to can get by him.
He's gonna have to make some of those outside shots because the defense will begin dropping off when they start seeing film of him blowing by guys who guard him closely outside.

Yes he can. This is why he will be better facing the basket. Don't know about the 3's, but remember, he is not a center, but a PF subbing for Mayfield (a true center).

If this is Sharpe just subbing at a position he isn't best at, then I can't wait to see him when Mayfield returns.

AMEN! That's what we are all waiting for!
Add in that Mayfield is a pretty good player himself as well as letting Walt play his true position.
Mayfield is coming back, right?
Sharpe knocked down a turn around three with a hand in his face from the baseline in the 2004 6A finals againest John Carroll, one of best shots I've seen to this day and one of the best games, it featured Ronald Steele, Demarre Carroll, Walter Sharpe, and a ton of DII and juco kids.
Mayfield, assuming his grades are in order, will be able to play after the fall semester ends. Channing Toney will hit the floor at about the same time, give or take. There are rumors that Toney has to sit out an additional game or two but I have not heard anything on that officially.
This team will start to look like UAB's best in 1982:

AJ - Jonath Nicholas - Two pure PGs
Walt - Chris Giles - PFs who can score and rebound
Mayfield - Norman - Big centers who can rebound and play D
Huffman - Craig Lane - Rebounding SFs who can score and rebound
Vaden - Big O - Pure shooters

Now throw in Lo, Berrios, Toney, Frank, et al and the this team will have a bench that 1982 never had.
Despite my criticisms of his intensity, I think WS is improving and could become great if he gives great effort on both ends of the court and limits his carelessness with the ball at times.
