Looks like the AD for Northwestern is moving on to Green Bay. What are the chances they might grab Jim Phillips as the new AD. He is a north side Chicago boy. Northwestern has a great educational reputation.

Just wondering if NW asked before U of I if he would go for it.

Heck no , in terms of atheltics NU would almost be demotion. Plus although the Illini had one good year playing weak teams, I do not think JP would go to such a decade long struggling fball program with U of I
In terms of salary and prestige it sure won't be a demotion.

Guaranteed he would leave for U of I. They would double his salary and let me think: Nationally recognized basketball program, and a Football program on the rise. Not a tough decision for JP. You guys live in a fantasy world. Wake up! I love NIU as much as anyone, I am Red and Black through and through, but NIU is not in the Big 10, SEC, or any other major conference. We are not a "dream" job for people. For Petes sake, Groth left for Nevada in the WAC. And you don't think JP would leave for the Big 10? You are truly nuts!

Again you drink too much NIU cool aid. The Northwestern AD job is way above NIU. They are in the Big 10 and one of the most prestigous universities in the nation. NIU is a fine place but NW is much better.
if u of i opened phillips would be gone in a second, its a BCS program, all sports in the Big Ten, and probably more money, compared to a NON BCS, the MAC Conference not to hard a choice there

1 year beating up on nobodys does not make for a football program on the rise. 1 year against subpar competition does not erase decade of futility. Plus their bball program has dropped out of the national rankings. Not really as attractive as you may think.

Wow.

You really are an idiot.

That has to be one of the dumbest posts of all time.

As opposed to NIU, with the 2-10 football team and one of the worst bball programs in America.

Just wow.

Well if a playoff system comes to be, and it eventually will, A BCS program won't matter anymore.
Their basketball team and other top 10 sports teams will still matter, the money they pay will still matter and the fact he went to school there will still matter. MaddDawgz is insane.. I don't know why people keep replying to his idiotic posts. You would think the Judson saga would have put to rest he knows very little about sports.

Illinois won a Big Ten title in 2001 and won a bowl game 63-21 in 1999. They're going to no worse than the Capital One Bowl this year and could make their 2nd appearance in the BCS in 7 years. Illinois had a horrific 4-year stretch, but the 4-year stretch that immediately preceded it could hardly be defined as futile. So much for the "decade of futility" line.

Even if you think it's not as attractive as everybody else here (apparently, everybody else is stupid), it's still an attractive job that would be a huge step up, especially for an Illinois alum. More money to play with (in terms of both salary and budget), more exposure, better facilities, etc. etc. etc.

Phillips went to Illinois and if you honestly believe that he would stay at NIU if offered the AD job at Illinois then you need to seriously examine your ability to analyze a situation. Maybe he won't end up as the AD at Illinois, but if he is offered the job in Champaign he will leave.
JP to NU? - nah. He knows there are bigger prizes if he holds on for a little longer.

Regardless of Big Ten tie-in, NU is an athletics nobody (not comparing NU to NIU). JP has has much bigger aspirations. He is here at NIU, building his resume, making more contacts, watching others rise and fall, bidding his time before he strikes. The fraternity of AD's is pretty small, and I am sure ripe with rumors as to who will retire when, get fired here, quit there - he has his eyes on a bigger prize than NU and is probably well tuned into the AD information pipeline.

He is in REALLY good right now at NIU, I would say he would gain more pub for himself with a big name football coach hire, and then success on both the field and the court, than if he went onto NU right now. He shares the limelight with no one else in DeKalb, if he goes to NU he is lost in the light of the big city. In the MAC and DeKalb, everyone knows JP is NIU's AD and many know of the improvements he's seen to - in Evanston he becomes second fiddle in an academic institution.

My guess? He wants Notre Dame. But that is just a guess.
People need to stop taking Maddawgz so seriously.

You are a complete idiot. They beat Ohio State (#1 in the country at the time), Wisconsin, and Penn State. If you think those programs are nobodies, then you are a moron. And a decade of futility? Please check what year they played in the Sugar Bowl....that would be January of 2002. Please stop these idiodic posts.

Thanks 7! This guy is an idiot. Probably an 8th grader playing on Daddy's computer!
No way he goes to Northwestern.

Now U of I for sure he goes.

But Northwestern would be a last stop type deal. Once he goes there his star gets dim.

I think while at NIU he is a rising star, if he picks Northwestern it is going to be tough to be a rising star there. Not saying it's a bad school, but if he doesn't see it as his last stop no way he is going to go there.

U of I is a step above Northwestern by far! I think Northwestern has fallen off so much in sport they are close to being passed by NIU...which isn't an easy thing. But Northwestern sucks at almost everything.

I hate bringing out numbers but someone should seriously calculate the 5 year W/L records of NIU/NU/and Illinois fball programs. Im willing to bet NIU stacks up favorably with those schools.

Im not arguing Illinois did not have a better year than NIU, they obviously did. I just wanted to make sure noone was making some crazy jump that Illinois has a better FOOTBALL PROGRAM than NIU. One good year does equate to a good football program.
