Northern Illinois has called a press conference for Monday at 4pm ET with head coach Joe Novak and AD Jim Phillips to "discuss Novak's contract status and future plans."
Thanks. It seems it could go either way. This however makes me think that he will be staying at least one more year. Just a gut feeling.
I vote for hes done

It does seem pretty quick to come to terms doesn't it? Guess we will find out tomorrow.
sadly i want a new HC
After a lifetime of experience and success, does a coach get so dumb after one bad season that he has to be discarded?

THis was the last year on his contract. He has been talking about retiring soon(already has a home in the Carolinas for his retirement). I don't think he is being discarded at all if he does not come back.
Time to say goodbye...bring him back for another year? That would make recruting a reallly difficult chore...who wants to commit to a program w/o knowing who'll be in charge in a year? You either bring him back for 2 or preferably 3 years so he has a chance to rebuild the program completely or you say "thank you" and move on.

THat is pretty much what most our board was thinking. Especially since we have about 25 or so scholarships to give out after next year.
Press conferences aren't usually called for coaches who are just renewing their contracts...

100% AGREEMENT>

If Joe is leaving, he is leaving because he wants to leave. NO WAY IS HE BEING PUSHED>

Exactly what I was thinking. I think he is retiring.

They are posting on NIU's board that he told the team this morning that he is retiring.

If this is true, happy trails to a good coach and a class act.
It was announced on 670 AM - The Score that he has indeed retired.

I am so grateful for what he did with our program and he deserves a huge thank you. You will be missed Mr. Novak and i hope we can bring in a new coach with the same honor, discipline, and winning attitude that you brought us.
One of the classiest coaches in MAC history. I always like Joe, and will miss his calm demeanor on the sidelines. Not a conservative field general (like some I wish to forget). Never went for the tie (before overtimes). One of the most memorable was the Northwestern game where he went for it on 4th and goal (didn't make it, but what a great comeback). Also, I was at the NIU-Whisky game a few years back when NIU clearly got jobbed by the BT officials. Almost got my ass beat screaming at the zebras. I've also attended a game at NIU (vs. CMU). Great atmosphere, fine facilities. I would be proud to play for Joe Novak, a true gentleman in all respects. Best of luck to you and your family, Joe.
Well stated CE.

Novak is class through and through and just a down to earth guy.

He always returned calls and when he called back it was always, "Hi Dave, this is Joe." Never Coach Novak or Joe Novak. Just Joe.

Going to be really missed.

If the reports are indeed true, allow me to express my appreciation for Joe Novak here as well. Coach Novak is truly a class act in every respect, and MAC football will be the worse for his departure.

I had the pleasure of being coached by Novak in the late 80s (he was still the offensive coordinator at Indiana then, and he was my position coach at a few summer camps), and he always treated players with respect while instilling discipline and fundamentals.

I wish him and his family nothing but the best, and hopefully, NIU will do something dramatic to leave a legacy in his name.
I have a friend who played for Joe when he was assistant coach at IU. They are good friends as of today. A true gentleman. Also, honorable as he apparently did not leave the cupboard bare. 04-cheers
