Like I mentioned before, I'd like Hawaii to stop scheduling MWC teams. They no longer do anything for us. But, I think it's good that NMSU schedule both UNM and UTEP. They're both good rivalry games and it's good economics due to their proximity to each other and the interest in the communities.
That also goes for Nevada and UNLV, and USU and Utah/BYU.
With that being said, I believe that the WAC is now going to have a rivalry conference.
As we all know, Pac-10 football is coming back to ESPN. (Edited for accuracy).
...and I think this is a really good thing for the WAC. Why?
1. The WAC now has three things in common with the Pac-10.
First - Both are D-1a. Second - Both are Western conferences. Third - Both are now affiliated with ESPN. Simply by the Pac-10 joining ESPN, I think a bond is going to form between the two conferences.
2. Scheduling. Both conferences are going to look even more closely at each other when scheduling OOC games. Why? First - Proximity. Second - Economics. Third - National exposure on ESPN. Fourth - Rivalry.
3. ESPNU. Personally, I think ESPNU is where the Pac-10 will weigh heavily...and will definitely benefit both conferences.
ESPNU is a candidate for basic cable. But the "driving" factor for "everything" is "demand". The "demand" for ESPNU will definitely increase now that both Western conferences are tied directly to ESPNU. The pressure is going to be turned up on local cable companies to add ESPNU to the basic package. Currently, with my basic cable package, I have ESPN, ESPN2, and ESPNC. Now it's time to add ESPNU.
Now, here's another reason why I like how things are developing for the WAC. Using SJSU for example. As a WAC member, their rivalry games in the Pac-10 will likely be Stanford and Cal. When Cal plays SJSU at Cal, the game could likely be played on ESPN. When Cal plays SJSU at SJSU, the game could likely be played on ESPN. Many pluses exist.
Now, if SJSU were a MWC team, Cal would really have to think long and hard on scheduling SJSU. Why? Because if Cal played SJSU at SJSU, the game would likely be played on CSTV. That's a pretty low blow for a BCS conference. And if SJSU were to play at Cal, the game would likely not be aired at all. ESPN has truly severed all ties with the MWC. No pluses here.
Another thing to think about: Looking at California alone, all the D-1a schools and their 2 conferences are affiliated with ESPN...
...oh...except for one. ;-)
