Full Version: Pac-10 - Is good for ESPN and good for the WAC

Like I mentioned before, I'd like Hawaii to stop scheduling MWC teams. They no longer do anything for us. But, I think it's good that NMSU schedule both UNM and UTEP. They're both good rivalry games and it's good economics due to their proximity to each other and the interest in the communities.

That also goes for Nevada and UNLV, and USU and Utah/BYU.

With that being said, I believe that the WAC is now going to have a rivalry conference.

As we all know, Pac-10 football is coming back to ESPN. (Edited for accuracy).

...and I think this is a really good thing for the WAC. Why?

1. The WAC now has three things in common with the Pac-10.

First - Both are D-1a. Second - Both are Western conferences. Third - Both are now affiliated with ESPN. Simply by the Pac-10 joining ESPN, I think a bond is going to form between the two conferences.

2. Scheduling. Both conferences are going to look even more closely at each other when scheduling OOC games. Why? First - Proximity. Second - Economics. Third - National exposure on ESPN. Fourth - Rivalry.

3. ESPNU. Personally, I think ESPNU is where the Pac-10 will weigh heavily...and will definitely benefit both conferences.

ESPNU is a candidate for basic cable. But the "driving" factor for "everything" is "demand". The "demand" for ESPNU will definitely increase now that both Western conferences are tied directly to ESPNU. The pressure is going to be turned up on local cable companies to add ESPNU to the basic package. Currently, with my basic cable package, I have ESPN, ESPN2, and ESPNC. Now it's time to add ESPNU.

Now, here's another reason why I like how things are developing for the WAC. Using SJSU for example. As a WAC member, their rivalry games in the Pac-10 will likely be Stanford and Cal. When Cal plays SJSU at Cal, the game could likely be played on ESPN. When Cal plays SJSU at SJSU, the game could likely be played on ESPN. Many pluses exist.

Now, if SJSU were a MWC team, Cal would really have to think long and hard on scheduling SJSU. Why? Because if Cal played SJSU at SJSU, the game would likely be played on CSTV. That's a pretty low blow for a BCS conference. And if SJSU were to play at Cal, the game would likely not be aired at all. ESPN has truly severed all ties with the MWC. No pluses here.

Another thing to think about: Looking at California alone, all the D-1a schools and their 2 conferences are affiliated with ESPN...

...oh...except for one. ;-)
Even NMSU has AZ and AZ state in close proximity. I would love for the WAC to continue to grow stronger and form big rivalries with the PAC 10.

. ;-)

Uhh better double check that. PAC-10 is still Fox sports. They signed a small contract with ESPN to show a few games next year but most will still be on FSN.

In addition , CBS now owns CSTV so that Pac 10 game at Utah would be on CBS, which has better coverage than ESPN. I also think you will see MWC games on ESPN this fall as CSTV has agreed to sell some of the MWC games out to ESPN and FSN. In fact, that is required in their MWC contract.

ESPNU actually has fewer suscribers than CSTV and is not part of any basic package TV either.

PAC 10 has also added another league game so 9 of their 12 games are conference games. I doubt there will be any more scheduling opportunities than there are now.

CSTV may or may not be good for the MWC, only time will tell. I do agree it is good for the WAC to have the MWC off ESPN for the most part, and will result in more TV for the top half of the WAC. but at least paint an accurate picture :)

An accurate picture according to whom, billings? You didn't cite any sources for your information. As far as I can tell, jediwarrior has more credibility than you do, that is unless you can give some sources for YOUR information. You may be given more credibility on the MWC board, but not necessarily on this one.

The PAC-10 did sign a deal with ESPN for football, but basketball games (as well as some football games) will still be on FSN.[/url]

After reading the article that StanfordAggie posted, it says: "The Pac-10 will also continue its deal with FSN, which carries the conference's "secondary package" of games, meaning it has its pick of contests not selected by ABC or ESPN". I stand corrected.

Quote:CBS now owns CSTV so that Pac 10 game at Utah would be on CBS, which has better coverage than ESPN.

Is this an assumption on your part? Or did CBS put out a statement?

CSTV may be willing to "sell" MWC games...but is ESPN or FSN willing to "buy". I guess we'll see.

NOt a problem I don't post this stuff unless I have some references. Go to the cstv site right on the top it says a CBS company and the deal ahs been released in many press releases CSTV and CBS put out a statement. Here is a link though

And now the MWC contract part

from this link http://themwc.collegesports.com/genrel/022205aac.html

CSTV is also charged with selling six to eight Mountain West games to national networks (either cable or broadcast). Irony of ironies, some of those games could end up on ESPN.

You are correct as to we will have to wait and see how it all works out and what games may end up on what networks. I hope it is a positive for both conferences

unlike ejmpalle, who is a MWC hater, I root for both to succeed but you have to be a realist and not a homer.

I do confess to being a homer from time to time however :) aren't we all
billings Wrote:unlike ejmpalle, who is a MWC hater, I root for both to succeed but you have to be a realist and not a homer.

You are right, for the most part. However, I do pull for Wyoming, SDSU, CSU and Air Force from time to time. I am a hater of BYU and Utah and I simply dislike UNLV and New Mexico. I don't really care about TCU, IE I don't have feelings either way for 'em.

I won't bash you, billings, as long as you're not derogatory towards Utah St on the MWC board. (I know you don't admit to ever having been derogatory.) Don't be a stranger and come talk some football with Aggie fans this summer and spring. And be patient with my fellow disrespectfull Aggies. ;-)

I'm very much looking forward to our series in football. Can't say the same about BYU, even though I feel like Utah St has just as good of a chance to beat BYU as they do Wyoming. Simply put, I wouldn't shed a tear if BYU were never on Utah St's schedule again, whether it is football or basketball. They only reason they are back on the schedule, other than monetary reasons, is that blue hairs and bandwagon aggies have been demanding a rescheduling with BYU.
