Wow to the score and Wow to the turnovers forced.

Is Buffalo State any good?

Buffalo State is not very good...obviously. UB is going to struggle this year, but they will play a different game than in years past without Idbihi in the middle. Who knows, though. This is college basketball. If one guy takes a big step forward, they could finish in the middle of the pack instead of near the bottom (as predicted).

They play Wednesday at the Coaches vs. Cancer tournament in Storrs against...Ohio Valley. No...not a team from the Ohio Valley Conference, but against Ohio Valley (a D2 school in West Virginia). Assuming UB wins, they'll play against UCONN the next night (or Morgan State)!
All I can is this is the first time I have seen more turnovers than points.

Wow.

I was wondering if they were competitive in Div. III. But i looked them up and they were 7th in the SUNYAC last season.

2006 13-13 (7-9)
2005 10-15 (5-11)
2004 13-12 (7-9)
BG Beat Wayne St 59-44.

Defense was vastly improve along with ball handling but FG% was terrible (30%).

From reports, Orr did quite a bit of playing with the lineup and getting a good feel for the team. There's a great deal of optimism surrounding the men's bball program in BG.
BSU opens their season with a single exhibition against Div. III Anderson University on Sunday. BSU has an all-time record of 12-1 against AU, with the last AU victory in 1959.

Quote:DeKALB - Lining up to do a pre-game drill, the 2007 Northern Illinois University basketball team covered an entire side of the court.

With 17 players dressing, the Huskies won't have any depth issues this year. The new-look Huskies, under the direction of first-year coach Ricardo Patton, received a thunderous standing ovation from the 1,469 fans in the Convocation Center before even scoring a basket.

The small, but vocal crowd delighted in welcoming a new group of Huskie coaches and players. Playing on a night more suited for prep football, Northern Illinois kicked off a new era with a 87-70 over Aurora in an exhibition game.

“I saw some great intensity from our team tonight,” Patton said. “Hopefully, the fans leave here tonight with a good feeling where the program is headed. It's still early.”

By looking at the results of Friday's night exhibition game, the NIU program is set for a gradual incline. Following last year's dismal 7-23 record, the Huskies have nowhere to go but up.

The Huskies attacked the Spartans with waves of players. Sixteen players got on the court, with Patton utilizing a 13-player rotation for most of the game. Najul Ervin didn't play due to a pulled muscle. Lee Fisher, Michael Fakuade and Darrius Gaters all entered the game in the final two minutes.

The Huskies, even with the big roster, committed just 11 turnovers and registered 23 assists.

“Turnovers cost us games and that's one of our points of emphasis in practice,” Patton said. “

The last few Huskie teams lacked an identity, athleticism and didn't display much toughness, particularly in the paint. And chemistry was a word often used, but not displayed.

That wasn't the case Friday.

Senior forward Michael Hart was a perfect example of that difference. Last year, Hart tried out for the team, but didn't make the cut. Against Aurora, Hart dominated the middle for the early minutes, scoring four of NIU's first eight points. He added two quick baskets after halftime, including a powerful dunk off a blocked shot.

The 6-foot-7 Hart finished with 10 points and three rebounds in 14 minutes in his first collegiate action in nearly two years. Hart played for Carthage College before attending Northern Illinois.

“Last year it just didn't work out for me and it didn't happen on making the team,” Hart said. “Coach Patton gave me a chance. I was just rusty tonight. I felt we shared the basketball and the guards played really well.”

Junior guard Jarvis Nichols, who sat out last season with a broken left foot, tied with Shaun Logan for team-high honors with 14 points. Nichols connected on all three of his three-point attempts to start his playing career on a high note.

“I haven't been shooting well in practice lately so it was nice to knock down my shots,” Nichols said. “This was a good test for us. Our chemistry was great. We played well for our first game.”

Juco transfer Sean Smith displayed a good mid-range jumper in his first game. Smith shot 5-of-11 from the floor to end with 11 points.

The Huskies played with good effort, displayed chemistry on the court with good ball movement and attacked the Spartans with relentless defense. The play of the guards - Nichols, Ryan Paradise, Cody Yelder and Michael Patton - was another positive. The Huskies pushed the ball and weren't afraid of taking chances on defense.

The one glaring weakness the Huskies showed was perimeter defense. The Spartans relied on their plethora of shooters to stay within striking distance of the Huskies. Aurora, a Division III school, drilled 13 treys among its 22 field goals.

Doug Lambert and Chad Trudo both nailed four threes, but forward Larry Welton (19 points) entertained the fans with two electrifying dunks. Welton shook the rim with an alley-oop dunk and posterized NIU forward Egan Grafel late in the game.

“You never want to apologize for a win no matter what way you get it,” Patton said. “Aurora was a very good shooting team and they did a nice job. They're well-coached. Our veterans guys did a nice job tonight for us.”

The Huskies host Augustana Monday at 7 p.m. in their final exhibition game. Former DeKalb High School standout Kyle Waller, a sophomore guard for Augustana, returns home to play the Huskies.
The Cards defeated Anderson 82-61 in exhibition action. Leading the way was a sick Anthony Newell with a 16 pt, 14 board performance. Stovall had 9 points, 7 boards, 5 assists, 3 steals, 1 block, and no turnovers. Also in doubles were newcomers Perry (17 pt) and Twyman (10 pt).
MileHighBronco Wrote:The Broncos played their first and only exhibition game last night against DIII Tri State (Ind.) and squeaked out a 94 - 54 win.

They have a week to prepare before heading to Eugene, Oregon for the World Vision Invitational where they will face Pacific on Nov. 10, Pepperdine on Nov. 11 and 13th ranked Oregon on Nov. 12.

I was in Eugene a couple months ago for my BIL's wedding and visited McArthur Court...talk about taking a walk back in time! That place is 80 years old and a BiG time throwback. It makes Anderson Arena look like a new building. LOL! Also got to see Autzen Stadium.
Longtime Miami assistant coach Frankie Smith got the head coaching job at Division II Saginaw Valley State. He hired an all Miami staff of assistants and his first game was an exhibition at Miami last week. Miami won by 20. Miami's second scrimmage is Thursday vs Divison II California of Pennsylvania. Michael Bramos and Tim Pollitz scored half of our points.
