I thought about this last night and wanted to hear opinions from everyone on the board. Who were the biggest recruiting busts at your school and why? Could it be too much hype, trouble with the law, or something else? These are the people that make us fans shake our heads and say, "Why did we recruit this guy?"

I have two good examples, one from EMU and one from UT(the groans and moans will happen when I mention this person's name).

EMU-Chris Archey(sp), transfer from U of Cinncy. Came on campus in the Winter of 2001 hyped up. Watched a couple of his games, kid couldn't catch a pass, let alone a cold. Don't know if he finished school or not.

UT(let the moans and groans commence)-Chris Jaquillard(sp), Woodward High School in Toledo(Jamie Farr's alma mater). Desent RB but had one good year in 1991 where he broke the single game rushing record(later to be broken by Aric Clay). Pinkel signed him and one year later, was arrested for drug possession.

Yeah, I remember him quite well. Of course don't let some of the Rocket fans know that Pinkel actually recruited a "problem" player.

Anyway, in the end it worked out OK for Toledo as Casey McBeth was 1st team All-MAC in 1992 and 1994 and became the first running back in UT history to gain over 1,000 yards in two different seasons. Then of course that took us to Wasean Tait in 1995 with 1,905 yards rushing and a 11-0-1 record.
Jacquillard went on to play at Findlay after serving his time, I think.

Biggest bust? Steve Cooper, highly regarded point guard from New Jersey. Played poorly with a bad attitude but had the decency to transfer to BG after his frosh or soph year. Not sure how his career went there but I don't think he played much. In return we got former Bedford and eventual All-MAC point guard Jim Kindle, who transferred from BG to UT.

I'm sure there were worse ones in MAC history and probably Toledo history but I always thought we got by far the better end of that deal so it worked out well.
Bobcat basketball has had all or nothing from O'Shea recruits.

C Marin Bota was a transfer from Auburn who O'Shea describe as having "NBA skills". The kid played 11 minutes of horrific basketbell, then got hurt, then bitched about playing time.

SF Johnnie Jackson was a transfer from Boston College who O'Shea described as the best athlete ever brought into the program and was said to be the best player in practice on the team and that Ohio would be a "slam dunk" to win the MAC with him. He could not even beat out Jeff Halbert a slow white shooter for the starting forward spot and averaged 3 ppg then was academically ineligible for a fall quarter, then managed to get him self thrown off the team due to his demeanor in warmups and on the bench. The kid couldn't shoot, couldn't pass, couldn't dribble and couldn't guard any MAC power forwards ast 6-5 210. He was good at bitching about playing time. He did that at Boston College when he sat behind all-american Jared Dudley prior to transfering to Ohio.
home about the NIU QB recruit that left notre dame??? whatever happened to him?
BG got a supposed McDonald's HS All-American basketball recruit back in the late 80's or early 90's named Dan Raupp. And he turned out to be one of the worst college players I have ever seen. He hardly ever played.

RWT:

Good call. Raupp was around during my time at BG. Bust with a capital B.

Heck, this one just about convinced *me* to enroll at BUGS.
I remember watching McBeth on TV when Channel 11 or 13 showed UT games on TV. He was great. Tait was awsome, until he blew out his knee in 96 or 97 and got in trouble in TPD at some party in 97. People who were there told me the story about him getting arrested and Carty going on tv complaining about the college parties the next day or two.
