Kirk Herbstreit takes a shot at MAC too... (interview was done right after Appy State stunned UM)

"CFN: How stunned were you by the Michigan loss to Appalachian State?

KH: I was blown away. On GameDay that morning, I delivered L.C. (Lee Corso) some cupcakes. We thought this was a joke. It’s I-AA, it’s an embarrassment to the fans and the schools to have these games set up, and then a few hours later you have this all-timer of an upset. I understand Appalachian State is good at the I-AA level, or whatever it is these days, but imagine losing to a MAC school if you’re a Michigan or a Ohio State, but losing to a I-AA school, it’s not just the humiliation you have to deal with, it affects the aura of the program which affects recruiting and affects the perception of the school. Right now, it’s trendy to jump on Michigan, and I think it’s trendy to call Lloyd Carr to be fired, but if they come out and play against Oregon like I think they will, and take out a week’s worth of embarrassment, then it could salvage the season. But if they come out and lose to Oregon, because they have so many seniors who came back to win a national title and be the BCS championship type team, then the season is officially over."

and this special little shot for my Flash friends...:

"CFN: What’s one thing you’d change about college football?

KH: (Long pause) One thing I’d like to do from scheduling standpoint, and this is no disrespect to Appalachian State, but I’d prefer to see Virginia Tech vs. LSU, Cal vs. Tennessee type of games. The thing that bothers me is the different agendas when it comes to schedules. You have the athletic directors who want to pay off the debt. You have the coaches who want the eight wins and a bowl game. And then you have the players and fans, and they want the big matchups, they want the big challenges. I would mandate that four of the six BCS conference would have to play at least two of their non-conference games against other BCS teams. Whatever you do with your other non-conference games is up to you.

CFN: But considering these guys have to hit the ground running from day one, and there isn’t a four-five game preseason like the NFL to tune up, wouldn’t the overall product be better if everyone played one cupcake first?

KH: Take Virginia Tech. They have the emotion of East Carolina to start, but they’ve been thinking about LSU all off-season and preparing since January. I think when you start out with a tough opponent, you focus better. When you get through those long two-adays, the big games help get you focused and going rather than starting off with an Appalachian State or Kent State. If you’re Tennessee and starting out against California, even though it was a loss, it gets everyone’s attention all summer. As far as execution, they only had something like three penalties …
You're only now realizing he's an idiot, too?

+1.

Herbstreit is a tool for the Big 10 and the rest of the BCS.

You can also add Lou Holtz to the idiots on ESPN.
Didn't Herbie play for tOSUcks??? 03-drunk

He's just trying to save face and protect his manhood because his biggest rival just took one in the face and anything that threatens that, threatens his fragile ego.... The swipe a KSU was a swipe @ Lou Holtz.

I hate to devalue his argument about big match-ups but the college 119 polls (as opposed to acknowledging only the top 25 03-snooty) regularly include teams from the BCS conferences. Recently teams ranked in the 100's included Notre Dame, Syracuse and Duke (a regular04-cheers), and i specifically mention "conferences" because i refuse to acknowledge the "bcs" as an entity unto itself 05-mafia. Furthermore, if you want to only watch BIG games with teams stacked with the best football players in the world, watch the NFL!!!!!!!! I conclude my rant by stating the Herbie is not an independent journalist..... that is he works for a corporation. They operate under the notion that big teams loosing to small ones potentially hurts income as fewer viewers would tune in to watch the resulting devalued games. Fact is, these rare events make the early games, and the Bowls themselves, more exciting. ???With current trends, hasn't the Rose Bowl been reduced to a side show of a flower parade and the BCS???

out
He is a proponent of the BCS yet wants those "big time" matchups. This is a contradiction. The BCS is what is preventing most of those "big time" matchups. Think about how "big time" the games would be in a 16 team playoff. 11 confenrence bids plus 1 for the independants, and then 4 at larges. It doesn't use any more time than the current setup and makes the regular season valuable because you have to win your conference to get that bid. A BCS type formula could be used to get the best of the rest in,which makes out of conference games important, and a committee to seed the teams. Use the bowls as the playoff spots, with a rotating system as to which bowl/sponsor gets the championship game. This would also give stability to the playoffs because the bowls would be forced to offer long term contracts so that sponsors would be guarenteed their name on the championship game when it's that bowls turn to host.
It's just too bad it will never happen because people like Kirk have their hands too deep into wanting to make their alma mater seem like it's the best, which favors the larger teams with more money.
The only way it's ever going to happen is for fans of the "lesser" conferences to stop watching or participating in anything to do with the BCS and rationally and calmly explain to BCS fans their reasoning and pros for a playoff. So far with most of the discussions I've seen about playoffs you get a bunch of screaming idiots who can't agree on a system or want an incomplete system and when nobody listens because they are coming off as idiots they take their ball and go home.

Ah, doesn't bother me. I actually like Hebstreit.

Once MAC teams start beating BCS teams regularly this will stop. We can't expect the media to give the league big time props when our best teams aren't BEATING these BCS teams. Notice I didn't say competing. Plain and simple, the MAC needs to start beating these teams.
I guess I'm not understanding why Ohio State or Michigan shouldn't think losing to a MAC team would be a bad loss. Is there really anyone here who doesn't think that?

First of all, those aren't polls. They're rankings made up by lazy websites and columnists. They're even more meaningless and subject to subjectivity and bias than the polls.

Several of those rankings had Syracuse lower than Buffalo last week. How'd that work out?

Not so fast, my friends...

A few years ago when the MAC had those three big wins on that one saturday, some one the Gameday crew (like Fowler) started to mention that maybe the MAC belongs in the BCS. Herbie basically laughed and said that the bottom of the conference is so bad that it couldn't be part of the BCS. So I wouldn't wait on Herbie to say something good about the MAC....it just ain't gonna happen.
Please refer to the part where Herbstreit doesn't tell the truth. What? You can't find it?

As much as we all don't want to believe it, what Kirk said is true. Ya, it hurts, but it's the truth. Our league sucks. Just accept it. We have to earn our respect on the field and we sure haven't done that in a long while, if ever.
Kirk's comments are being taken way too seriously here. Bottom line, it's a miniscule percentage of Michigan or Ohio State fans who would even conceive of losing to a MAC school in football.

Most of the time I've heard Herbstreit speak of the MAC, he has been fair. Remember all of the good press we received a few years ago when the league deserved it? Those were the days!
