I can't blame TJ for taking that job and I appreciate the job he did in bringing the Nevada program to the level it has been at the last couple years.

Great opportunity for BRonco Basketball Alum Trent Johnson! Congrats to Trent. A well deserved opportunity. I will be cheering for the Cardinal from this point on!
Outside the mega-millions world there are two types of coaches.
Those who do well enough to move up.
Those who get fired.
The keys for the non-mega-million programs are to hire good replacements and always hope that they hire coaches who not only move up but make GOOD moves up that make it easier to replace them.

Once a program establishings a track record of putting coaches in BCS high paying jobs, it becomes much easier to replace the departing coaches with quality up and coming coaches.
When a program has a track record of firing coaches, it is hard to find a great new coach to replace the fired coach.
Some places are difficult to recruite to or win. But they can turn around. Look at Kansas State!
Another example is Idaho. After years and years of losing....I don't know if the vandals ever had 2 winning seasons in a row, Dennis Erickson turned the program around in one year and the vandals became winners for about 17 years in a row in d1aa. Then they hired Cable and he returned the vandals to their losing ways.

Another example is Tulsa and Gooch = bad, bad, bad team. Tulsa hires Kragthorpe and goes bowling. Kragthorpe used many of the same players that Gooch used to win!

Couple a bad hire with stretching the budget thin in the Belt and with not playing many regional teams and the bottom fell out.

That's a shame (if true) for Nevada. I thought he (Johnson) said just a month or so ago that he was committed to staying at Nevada for the long term.
Gotta be impressed with the success of Mike and Trent tho. Both of them are products of Boise State's program during the Bobby Dye years. Montgomery was an assistant coach at Boise State and Johnson was a player for Boise State. Good luck to both of them.

I believe that Erickson, Gilbertson, Smith and Tormey are the only coaches in the history of Idaho football to have winning records.
A vandal fan may be able to come up with another winner!
Cable was delt a bad hand. Moving to the Sun Belt and playing a Sun Belt Schedule hurt Idaho's ability to recruit good players.
